Spyro Gyra-Electric City-Buffalo, NY-March 12. 2025-
Spyro Gyra-Electric City
-Buffalo, NY-March 12. 2025-

Spyro Gyra, out on the road in support of their latest album Jubilee and their 50th anniversary stopped by Electric City in Downtown Buffalo on March 12, 2025 before a full house of old and new friends and fans. Buffalo of course is where the band was formed and cut their chops to become one of the pre eminent forces in contemporary jazz music. Led by founding member Jay Beckenstein on Saxophones along with Julio Fernandez on guitar and vocals, Scott Ambush on bass, Lionel Cordew on drums and Chris Fischer on keyboards they performed selections from their vast catalog of songs and from their latest album Jubilee during the ninety minute set. Kicking things off with “Cape Town Love” off the Original Cinema album they followed that up with “50/50” a celebration of the band’s anniversary off the new album Jubilee. Next up was the Julio Fernandez track about his emigration from Cuba as a child “The Crossing” followed by the powerful “Unknown Soldier” inspired by Beckenstein’s visit to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery. They picked things up with a couple of fan favorites “Old San Juan” and “Heliopolis” before serving up a new and as yet unreleased track titled “Frequent Flier” a sly nod to the band’s late vibraphone/marimba player David Samuels who had a dreaded fear of flying. Another nod to a former player this time retired keyboardist Tom Schuman came with a nice run through “City Kids” followed by another Fernandez composition “De La Luz” and Ambush’s intricate piece “Wiggle Room”. They closed the show with two of their biggest hits “Catching the Sun” and “Morning Dance” before returning for an encore of “Daddy’s Got a New Girl”. Max Hightower-Nothin’ but the TRUTH-

Max Hightower
-Nothin’ but the TRUTH-

Max Hightower got hooked on the blues at age twelve. Soon after, his grandmother gave him her old rusty stringed Silvertone guitar to play but after seeing his frustration with the guitar she bought him a harmonica and Hightower blossomed into an ace harp player by his teens. After paying his dues in smoky clubs and lots of road work he became a founding member of Mac Arnold and Plate Full O’ Blues where he again took to the road for countless miles. During that time he kept writing his own songs and after years with Arnold decided to branch out on his own finally. Fed up with studios that would only work with click tracks and overdubs he did the polar opposite and headed to Big Jon Atkinson’s BigTone Studio in New Orleans where they still use reel to reel tape, vintage RCA ribbon microphones and vintage tube amps to record his new album titled Nothin’ but the TRUTH live from the floor in real time with mistakes and all left in, no overdubs. Hightower (vocals/harmonica/guitar) is backed on the record by Steadman “Fleetwood” Williams Sr. (bass) and Brandon Phelps (drums) and a rotating line up of some of the finest French Quarter musicians including Rob Davis (keyboards), James Beaumont (Sax) and Big Jon Atkinson (guitar) to name a few, where they all got down and dirty and funky and greasy over twelve outstanding tracks. Tracks of note from Nothin’ but the TRUTH include the snappy and funky “Double Bubble”, the slinky and soulful “It’s On Me”, the bluesy and mellow “Damned If I Do”, the horn driven funky blues romp “Twitchy Witcha”, “Sweet Gum Tree’ with its Bourbon Street vibe, another soul and funk workout “Too Much Of Not Enough”, “Thick Jello” about his love for a certain kind of woman, the piano driven blues rocker “Snuggle Bug” and the funky instrumental groove of the album closer “Assmograph”. Mark Muleman Massey-Been A Long, Long Time-
Mark Muleman Massey-
Been A Long, Long Time-

Mark Muleman Massey’s life reads like the screenplay about a blues man except he has really lived the life. A grandson of sharecropper farmers he grew up in the cradle of the blues Clarksdale, Mississippi. At nineteen he was incarcerated at Parchman Prison which was modeled after a slave plantation and run as such. Although he had never picked up a guitar, during his time at Parchman he learned to play under the mentorship of David Kimbrough, son of legendary guitarist Junior Kimbrough, soon he was playing with the Parchman Prison Band where he opened for B.B. King. After prison Massey vowed to turn his life around and help others. He still returns to Parchman but this time to mentor and assist inmates with their musical aspirations and dealing with prison life. For his latest album titled Been A Long, Long Time Massey headed to Wishbone Recording Studios in the legendary city of Muscle Shoals, Alabama where he was assisted by the renowned Clayton Ivey on Wurlitzer and B3 along with Jim Whitehead also on Wurlitzer and B3, Billy Lawson, Travis Wammack and Kelvin Holly on guitars, Bob N. Weaver on bass, Roger Starr on drums, Robert Fossen on harmonica, The Avalon Sisters on backing vocals and The Webster Street Horns. Massey is a soulful blues belter and the mix of originals and cover tunes shows both his vocal ability and his adept guitar fretwork. Highlights from Been a Long, Long Time include the feel good title cut, the funky blues gem “Can’t Tell Me Nothing About The Blues”, the shimmering soulful ballad “Give Me Your Love”, the celebratory “Going Back To Memphis” and the percolating LP closer “Your Good Stuff”. Massey also does a sweet run through Tom T. Hall’s “That’s How I Got to Memphis”, nails Bobby Womack’s “I’m Sorry About That” and reworks Hank Williams “Hey Good Looking” into a funky strutting number. But the center piece on the record is what should be an instant blues classic the outstanding “Baby’s Gone”. This song packs such an emotional wallop that it actually brought tears to this reviewer’s eyes upon listening. The song is a true masterpiece and an unforgettable vocal performance by the Muleman. Steve Howell & The Mighty Men- Yeah Man-
Steve Howell & The Mighty Men
- Yeah Man-

Finger picking guitarist Steve Howell has learned the art of time travel. Well kinda. You see Howell and his band The Mighty Men like to travel back to bygone eras and unearth long forgotten song gems, buff them up and give them a fresh interpretation. Much of this music would be lost forever if artists such as Howell didn’t take the time to rediscover this music. Howell’s latest album titled Yeah Man is a twelve song cycle of blues, soul, spirituals, jazz and even some Doo-Wop for good measure. Howell who handles vocals and acoustic and electric guitars is backed by his regular group The Mighty Men featuring Chris Michaels on electric guitars and vocals, Dave Hoffpauir on drums and vocals and Jason Weinheimer on bass, keyboards and vocals. Among the many highlights from Yeah Man is a steady as she goes take of Blind Lemon Jefferson’s “Long Lonesome Blues”, a soulful laid back run through the title cut “Yeah Man”, the fat juicy guitar riffs on Eddie Hinton’s “20 % Alcohol”, the country pop flavored “Little Ol’ Wine Drinker Me” which became an unlikely hit for actor Robert Mitchum in 1967, the gorgeous “I’m Glad For Your Sake” covered famously by the Sir Douglas Quintet, a percolating cover of Bo Diddley’s “Dearest Darling”, an uplifting and moving version of the spiritual “Wade in the Water” and an instrumental version of the Bob Dylan classic “Chimes of Freedom” that closes the album. The latest album from Steve Howell & The Mighty Men Yeah Man breathes new life into these lost gems.
