Over the past fifty years, Rick Falkowski has worked tirelessly to support the WNY music and entertainment scene. He is the founder of the Buffalo Music Hall of Fame, Buffalo Music Awards, and Buffalo Backstage Magazine, has served as the Entertainment Coordinator of the Gateway Concert Series and is a former employee at ASCAP. He also does presentations throughout WNY on the history of Buffalo's music and entertainment scenes. So who better to try to tackle the task of putting all that history and knowledge into a book than Falkowski? His epic tome History of Buffalo Music & Entertainment is a look back at our rich musical history from the Canalside days of the 1830's through the early 1980's. Packed with photos the book delves into the sometimes forgotten eras of Vaudeville, Burlesque and the Crystal Beach Ballroom and the effect they had on our area and the country. Falkowski also touches on the formation of the Buffalo Philharmonic, the Buffalo Sound, and the teen clubs of the 60's and the affluent tradition of Ethnic music. Other chapters touch on Bluegrass and country, Jazz and blues and radio and television. Falkowski's book is a very informative and enjoyable read. Does Falkowski mention every band, club and show that ever happened? Of course not, but that just leaves an opening for Volume Two. Hint, hint. Mr. Las Vegas, Wayne Newton, currently out on his Up Close and Personal Tour stopped by the Riviera Theatre and Performing Arts Center in North Tonawanda, NY on August 24, 2023 to the delight of a packed house of fans. Although he hasn’t had a hit in decades Newton continues to play to packed houses whether in Las Vegas where he has a residency at The Flamingo or when he does a tour such as the current one he is on the road performing. The solid two hour show aims to take a nostalgic trip through Newton’s career and personal life with “questions from the audience” read by his wife and MC Kathleen McCrone that set up various video clips or stories from his career intersperse with musical numbers. Clips included performances with Glen Campbell, Sammy Davis Jr. Dean Martin and solo clips ranging from a very young Wayne Newton to other television performances over the years. He recollected about his good friends Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley who with Newton make up the consummate trio of all time Vegas legends. His rapport with the audience is among the best in the business often asking for the house lights to be turned up to see and talk to the crowd. His spoke about his long time association and commitment to the USO and he asked all service and first responders in the audience to stand and take a bow. He also told the story of how after deciding to venture beyond the lounges of Vegas his first gig outside of that city was in Buffalo at the old Glen Park Casino in Williamsville, NY where he opened for Jayne Mansfield.
Mr. Newton has a commanding stage presence and while his voice may not be as nimble as his youthful days he brings all the glitz, glamour and schmaltz of Las Vegas to every performance. He is a self taught musician who can play multiple instruments yet cannot read a note of music. He opened the show with a medley of “CC Rider” and “Viva Las Vegas”, showed his prowess on the Steel Guitar on “Steel Guitar Rag” and his guitar dexterity on “Help Me Make It through the Night” and offered up a heartfelt “Can’t Help Falling in Love”. A medley of his greatest hits “Red Roses for a Blue Lady”, “Summer Wind”, “Danke Schoen” and “Daddy Don’t You Walk So Fast” reminded us that Newton at one time ruled the charts. He picked up the fiddle and gave a rendition of “Orange Blossom Special” that would have had Charlie Daniels drop his bow in awe to watch Newton play and a powerful version of “My Way” that closed the show.
Kudos to the staff and crew of the Riviera Theatre for bringing the iconic Wayne Newton to Western New York for this special performance. For more information about upcoming shows at the Riviera Theatre visit them at www.rivieratheatre.org

Roots artist Jhett Black has released a new album titled Babel an eleven song mix of gritty roots, blues, and rock and Gospel styles. Black harkens for a lean approach to his music with just guitar and drums, provided by Dusty Skins, along with some synth washes for color. With a deep baritone voice he draws the listener in to his musical world and sometimes dark lyrical content. Lots of good stuff to choose from including the gritty fuzzed out blues of the album opener “Roll Out”, the intoxicating “Mama Told Me Not To”, the Boogie blues number “Eve”, the title cut “Babel” featuring some fine slide guitar from Black, the dark and sinister sounding “Gold”, the powerful “Wayward Son”, the blues moaner “Devil Ain’t An Only Child”, the New Wave inspired blues rocker “Sonic Tonic” and a sly cover of the Freddie King classic “Going Down” that closes out the album. With a fresh and honest approach to the way he makes music Jhett Black is a true original. Critics favorite Dulcie Taylor has returned with another fine EP this one titled Edges of Silver. The acclaimed and gifted singer songwriter keeps things simple by not overdressing the songs with added instrumentations or effects. The music is there to sooth and accompanies the lyrics which are very important to each song. Taylor who handles guitar and vocals is assisted by a handful of musicians here including George Naufel on guitar and vocals, Damon Castillo on bass and Grammy winner producer Bob Cutarella on drums among others. The EP kicks off with “Backbeat In His Blood” about how everyone has the musical beat coursing through their veins followed by “We Almost Got It Right” a sweet message to a former lover. “Soft Place to Fall” is what we need sometimes with things get tough and we need a friend’s shoulder to help carry the burden while “Sometimes Love Ain’t Enough” deals with the fact that some relationships are doomed to fail. The EP closes with the up-tempo “Somewhere Bright” about a couple trying hard to get their relationship back on track. Blues guitarist extraordinaire Monster Mike Welch has released a new album titled Nothing But Time a fourteen song mix of originals and covers. For nearly thirty years Welch has been garnering praise and awards everywhere along the way. At the young age of thirteen and already a phenomenal guitarist Welch was bestowed the nickname “Monster Mike” by none other than Blues Brother Dan Aykroyd after seeing the youngster perform. For Nothing But Time Welch brought in producer and guitarist Kid Andersen to oversee the project along with Gulf Coast Records head and ace guitarist himself Mike Zito. Others assisting on the album include Jerry Jemmott (bass), Bob Welsh (piano), Fabrice Bessouat (drums) and special guest Rick Estrin (harmonica). Highlights off of Nothing But Time include the scorching kick in the doors “Walking To You Baby”, the sexy and funky title cut “I’ve Got Nothing But Time”, the swinging blues number “I Ain’t Sayin’”, the boogie woogie blues rocker “Losing Every Battle’, the slow blues howler “Hard To Get Along With”, the effervescent “Jump for Joy” and “Offswitch Blues” which while a rollicking blues number it deals with the serious issue of mental health. Some fine covers are mixed in among the originals including Buddy Guy’s “Ten Years Ago” which is tackled with aplomb here, a couple of Robert Johnson covers “If I Had Possession Over Judgement Day” and an acoustic “Kind Hearted Woman” and a killer rendition of George Harrison’s “I Me Mine”. With sandpaper smooth vocals and guitar chops to boot Nothing But Time is a fine addition to the Monster Mike Welch catalog. Blues and roots keyboard wiz Mitch Woods has released a deluxe version of his historical album Friends Along The Way with five previously unreleased tracks from the sessions. Throughout his distinguished career by himself, in the studio or with his band the Rocket 88s Woods has made musical friends along the way and figured it was natural to ask them to record with him. Some of these friends include Van Morrison, Taj Mahal, Ruthie Foster, Maria Muldaur, Elvin Bishop, Charlie Musslewhite, and Marcia Ball all who appear on the album. The unique thing about these recordings is that they are stripped down to the essence of the songs with Woods accompanying his friends in duo or trio arrangements for an intimate and unplugged style. The generous two disc package features twenty one tracks including the outstanding “Take This Hammer” and “Midnight Hour Blues” with Morrison and Mahal, “Singin’ the Blues” with Ruthie Foster, “Empty Bed Blues” featuring Muldaur, “The Blues” with Cyril Neville and “Saturday Night Boogie Woogie Man” featuring Elvin Bishop. Further digging finds more nuggets with cuts from the late greats John Lee Hooker and James Cotton on “Never Get Out Of These Blues Alive” and “Chicago Express” respectively, “In The Night” with Marcia Ball, “Southbound Blues” with John Hammond, “Blues Mobile” with Kenny Neal and “Worried Life Blues” featuring Joe Louis Walker. The latest from Mitch Woods Friends Along The Way is a culmination of a life spent in music and the enduring friendships it has made for him. Lee Oskar is a true modern day Renaissance man. He is a founder member of the band War, a world renowned harmonica virtuoso and the inventor of the now industry standard harmonica, a composer, producer, a painter and visual artist. He still keeps an active touring schedule as well with his band Lee Oskar & Friends and the LowRider Band. His latest album titled She Said Mahalo is a ten song collection of original compositions in his signature style. Oskar is surrounded by musical guests and friends Darian Asplund and Takahiro Miyazaki on Saxophone, Harold Brown and Andrew Cloutier on drums, Dean Schmidt on bass, Brian Monroney and Alex Mortland on guitars, Joe Doria and Mack Grout on keyboards and numerous others. The ten tracks are all instrumentals but lyrics are unneeded here as Oskar’s harmonica playing is the lyrics and the melody as they invoke a visual imagery based on the song titles. Highlights on She Said Mahalo include “Caribbean Love Song” with its gentle melody that perfectly captures the vibe and feel of the islands, the melodic tribute to our future “Children Of The World”, “Be. Happy.” a message to us all that we make our own happiness, “Morning Rush” a funky ode to the way a good portion of us start the day, the title cut “She Said Mahalo” a beautiful sounding celebration of life, “Memories” about those special moments and loved ones, the Roots Reggae vibe of “Most Favored Nation”, the gentle and easy “Sweet Lullaby” and “One-World Fist” celebrating the power that music has to heal and unite. The album also featuring extensive liner notes, harmonica tuning and beautiful paintings from Oskar throughout the packaging and is a must have for any fan of Oskar’s musical legacy. - Life Don't Miss Nobody -
Tracy Nelson has returned after a lengthy recording hiatus with her new release titled Life Don't Miss Nobody. Nelson is best known for having penned the modern standard "Down So Low" most notably covered by Linda Ronstadt. The idea for the new recording was simple; Nelson had a bucket list of artists she wanted to record with once again including Willie Nelson, Charlie Musslewhite, Irma Thomas and Marcia Ball. All obliged her request. Artists supporting Nelson on the album include John Gardner (drums), Byron House (bass), Kevin McKendree (piano), Mike Henderson and Larry Chaney (guitars) and a host of others. The album was recorded and mixed at Bell Tone Recording in Nashville by owner Roger Alan Nichols. Nichols had a brief flirt with R'n'R stardom in the 80's and 90's before getting a publishing deal and started to learn how to record, engineer and produce his own demos. He has gone on to record with Larkin Poe, Steven Tyler, Haley Williams of Paramore and Tyler Bryant and the Shakedown to name a few. Highlights among the thirteen tracks on Life Don't Miss Nobody include the barrelhouse piano rocker "Strange Things Happening Every day", the mournful and churchy Doc Pomus penned classic "There Is Always One More Time" featuring long time Willie Nelson harmonica player Mickey Raphael, the cautionary title track "Life Don't Miss Nobody" written by Tracy Nelson and Mike Dysinger, a duet with Jontavious Willis on Sonny Boy Williamson's "Your Funeral And My Trial", "I Did My Part" with Ball and Thomas adding vocals, the traditional message of hope "Hard Times" done here with both a band and an acoustic version, covers of Hank Williams' "Honky Tonkin'" with Willie Nelson and Willie Dixon's "It Don't Make Sense" with Musslewhite and "Compared to What" with Terry Hauck on vocals and Saxophone. Two other tracks that stand out are the Gospel inflected "Where Do You Go (When You Can't Go Home" written by Tracy Nelson and Ball and a cover of Chuck Berry's "Brown Eyed Handsome Man". Nelson shows she still has the unparallel vocal chops that got her career started as evident with her latest album Life Don't Miss Nobody.
