Marty Stuart and His Fabulous Superlatives-West Herr Riviera Theatre-
North Tonawanda, NY-April 11, 2024-
They opened with the twangy country meets surf rock number “La Tingo Tango” followed by “Tear the Wood Pile Down” and a trio of early hits “Tempted”, “Hillbilly Rock” and a rowdy version of “The Whiskey Ain’t Working Anymore” that had the crowd singing along. Next up was “Sitting Alone” that Stuart said he wrote in Buffalo on a day off before a show a few years ago and “Tomahawk” both songs from their latest album Altitude before a sweet run through George Jones’ “Old, Old House”. Stuart then declared North Tonawanda to be “The surf music capitol of the world” before the band tore through the surf rock instrumental “Mojave”. The show kicked into high gear as each of the Superlatives got their chance to shine. First up was Vaughan with versions of “Country Music Got a Hold on Me” and “Hot Like That” featuring some of the finest guitar picking this side of the Milky Way. The band then gathered round together for the trucker’s anthem “Six Days on the Road” and a cover of Marty Robbins “El Paso”. Next in the solo spotlight was Scruggs who offered up the Bob Wills number “Brain Cloudy Blues” and the surf rock classic “Wipeout”. A highlight of the show was when Stinson took the lead for a cover of Woody Guthrie’s “Pretty Boy Floyd” and a poignant run through Roger McGuinn’s “The Ballad of Easy Rider” that he dedicated to the great Buffalo musician Willie Schoellkopf who recently passed away. Stinson had become close friends with Stinson during Stinson time living in Buffalo. Schoellkopf’s widow was also in attendance adding even more meaning to the dedication. They closed the show with “Time Don’t Wait” off the Way Out West album before returning for an encore with “Space’ from their latest album Altitude before saying goodnight. While I have never seen them put on a bad show, tonight’s performance was one for the ages from these bona fide superstars of country music.

Samantha Fish-Asbury Hall @ Babeville-Buffalo, NY-March 24, 2024-
Fish kicked off the show with “Bulletproof (Tangle Eye Mix)” from her album Kill or Be Kind and for the next two plus hours put on a master class in the blues. Fish has multitudes of stage presence whether commanding her band through their paces, engaging the audience or with dazzling displays of playing her guitar while kneeling and manipulating her guitar pedals or on her back mid solo. Further highlights from the show included outstanding renditions of “Wild Heart”, “Don’t Say You Love Me” along with “Better Be Lonely” and the title track from the album Kill or Be Kind. A mid show acoustic set had Fish solo with just an acoustic guitar for a stellar version of Charley Patton’s “Jim Lee Blues Pt 1” and a soulful and beautiful version of Gladys Knight’s “If I Were Your Woman”. The band returned and they headed for the end of the show with the soul stirring one two punch of “Somebody’s Always Trying” and “Never Gonna Cry” before closing the show with “Dream Girl” also from Kill or Be Kind and the monstrously funky blues number “Black Wind Howlin’”. Fish returned for an encore along with opening act JD Simo on guitar for a version of Junior Kimbrough’s “I’m in Love With You” and a romping “Bitch on the Run” before calling it a night. After the show Fish headed to the merch table where she spent a considerable amount of time greeting her fans, signing autographs and posing for pictures.
JD Simo opened the show with his own forty minute set of modern blues. Performing with just a drummer the two made for a nice juggernaut of slide guitar and rhythmic grooves. Thanks to Rob and Soul of Buffalo for the hospitality and for bringing Samantha Fish to town, Anna and everyone at Babeville including the fine production crew (Jay, Kenny and Jesse) for the awesome sound.

ALBUM REVIEWS
September 3rd, 2023 seemed as unassuming as any other gig for this band of road tested warriors except tonight the tapes would be rolling for a possible new live album. And thank goodness those tapes were rolling as musical magic was made. The band ,Willie Nile (guitar/piano/vocals), Johnny Pisano (bass/backing vocals), Jon Weber (drums) and Jimi K. Bones (guitar/backing vocals), are a band at the top of their game able to give powerful and emotional performances of songs that they have played countless times. The thirteen songs on Live at Daryl’s House Club span a considerable portion of Nile’s career. The album begins with Nile asking the crowd “Are you ready?” before he and the band launch in to a celebratory “Places I Have Never Been” which sets the mood for the evening’s performance. An absolutely incendiary version of “This Is Our time” and the spot on social commentary and funky blues work out “Earth Blues” keep things rolling along while the melancholy grandeur of “Lost And Lonely World” and an epic rendition of “Shoulders” change the pace a bit. Other highlights include “New York At Night”, “The Day The Earth Stood Still” and “Trouble Down In Diamond Town”. A galloping run through “House Of A Thousand Guitars” and the sing along anthem “One Guitar” round out the album. If you have never heard Willie Nile and his band live in concert then their latest album Live At Daryl’s House Club is the perfect place to start. Handsome Jack is back with a new slab of their swaggering psychedelic blues rock on their latest release A Good Thing. As usual the band, Jamison Passuite (vocals/guitar), Joe Verdonselli (vocals/bass) and Bennie Hayes (vocals/drums), wrote, recorded, mixed and produced the album on their own. They recorded the album at the old Harrison Radiator factory building in Lockport, NY on tape using a Tascam 388 with John Angelo doing the mastering. Evan Laedke stops by to add keyboards to the session. Highlights among the eleven tracks on A Good Thing include the bluesy rocker “Wind It Up” which opens the album and sets the tone for what’s to come, the brash yet soulful “Tough Love”, the greasy rocker “She Don’t Know How to Rock and Roll”, the groovalicious title cut “A Good Thing”, the down home comfort of “Sasparilla”, another soulful number “Nobody Left but You” and the musical nod to the late Band bassist “Rick Danko’s Red Floor”. Handsome Jack’s timeless fusion of boogie, blues, rock, soul and country makes A Good Thing another great album from these master purveyors of music. Hundred Seventy Split is a collaboration between Lyons (bass), Jesse Gooch (guitar/vocals) and Damon Sawyer (drums) that started before the pandemic and was paused for two years before returning to the studio to finish the album. The ten tracks on Movin’ On are in the classic power rock trio format with a heavy powerful rhythm section and top notch guitar and vocals. Tracks of note from Movin’ On include the sinister blues rocking nod to Robert Johnson and the Crossroads “Walking in the Devil’s Shoes” , the swinging blues shuffle “It’s So Easy to Slide”, the grandeur images of “The Heart of a Hurricane”, the sweeping beauty of “Black River”, the pedal to the metal rocker “Mad , Bad and Dangerous” featuring Bob Hadrell on Hammond B3, the acoustic shuffle “Meet Me at the Bottom”, the funky strutting “Beneath the Muddy Water” and the up tempo LP closer “Time To Kill”. Leo Lyons and Hundred Seventy Split are keeping the spirit of Rock and Roll alive with their latest release Movin’ On. Blues rock guitar slinger Shawn Kellerman adds the heat to his latest album titled Kell’s Kitchen a fourteen song selection of scorching blues rock. Raised on the blues Kellerman has been playing the blues for thirty plus years now first as a child in his father’s club in Kitchener, Ontario before being mentored by the legendary Mel Brown then hitting the road with blues legends Bobby Rush and then with Buffalo born Lucky Peterson until his passing. Both Rush (vocals/harmonica) and Peterson (Hammond B3) appear on Kell’s Kitchen along with other guests Jason Ricci (harmonica) and Miss Emily(vocals) , Noah Allard (vocals), ZOOM (vocals), Meghan Parnell (vocals) and Jon Knight (vocals) to name a few. Highlights from Kell’s Kitchen include the fast paced and percolating ode to the band “SKB”, the aptly titled rocker “Drivin’”, the funky exercise “Show Me What you Got”, the straight up with the facts “We Are Blues Men” with Rush, the stomping barn burner “Hard Man to Please” and the foreboding “You’re Gonna Learn From This One” both with Ricci’s signature harp sounds, the rootsy “Down By The River” with Allard on vocals, the swirling blues rocker “Mac & Cheese” featuring ZOOM on the vocal mic and the funky horn driven instrumental “JIG JIGGITY”. Also of note are a couple of cover songs a version of The Guess Who’s “Running’ Back To Saskatoon” on which Kellerman adds a little snarl and a cover of Little Milton’s “Living off the Love You Give” featuring Lucky Peterson. Shawn Kellerman’s latest album Kell’s Kitchen pushes the expected boundaries of the blues in a totally new direction in a positive way. Marshall Chess, son of legendary Chess Records co-founder Leonard Chess, has dug in the record company vaults and found a new way to present the legendary Chess catalog. Instead of straight forward versions of the songs he decided to have a super group of artists reimagine and reinterpret them in a new way. He recruited longtime Rolling Stones backup singer Bernard Fowler to sing got guitarist Skip “Little Axe” McDonald from Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five and finally world class drummer and percussionist Keith LeBlanc. For support they added guitarist Eric Gales (Santana, Gary Clark Jr., and Lauryn Hill), Paul Nowinski (Keith Richards/Patti Smith) and MonoNeon (Prince/Ne-Yo) on bass, keyboardist Reggie Griffin (Kenny Babyface Edmonds/Chaka Khan), Alan Glen (Jeff Beck/Peter Green) on harmonica and up and coming bassist Mohini Dey. Keepers among the eleven tracks on New Moves –The Chess Project include a red hot and funky “Boom Boom Out Go The Lights”, a couple of harp howlers “Moanin’ at Midnight” and “Smokestack Lightning”, the boozy and bluesy “Booted”, the rhythmic sounds of “Mother Earth”, the soul stirring groove of “Goin Down Slow”, the sizzling “High Temperature” along with the bouncy “Tell Me’ and the album closer “Help Me’ both featuring the impeccable guitar work of Eric Gales. New Moves-The Chess Project injects new life into these classic blues tunes and turns them into some funky soul biscuits.
