You
know you have reached a certain level of success when you are known only
by your first name. Oprah, Elvis, Madonna and I guess, Wynonna too. She
being the daughter half of the immensely successful mother daughter team
The Judd's. A solo artist for more than a decade after her mother's retirement
from performing she has carved out a fan base from among those of her earlier
days and a whole new generation that know her only as a solo act. She brought
her show billed as An Evening with Wynonna, to The Events Center in the
Seneca-Niagara Casino in Niagara Falls, NY on July 20th 2007 for an appreciative
audience. There is no doubt this woman has a set of pipes. You may think
she is a country performer and she does lay down the twang now and then
but she can belt them out like Bessie Smith. Her bluesy take about a woman
who leaves an abusive relationship on "That Was Yesterday" to use a tired
cliché, brought down the house. She turned the Foreigner classic
"I Want to Know What Love Is" to a soaring Gospel number. When she showed
her country roots it was on those classic Judd's songs "Mama He's Crazy"
complete with the requisite audience sing along, the wistful "Grandpa (Tell
Me 'Bout the Good Old Days)" and a stirring "Love Can Build A Bridge".
She returned for an encore and belted out her solo hit "No One Else on
Earth" before leaving to rapturous applause. Okay, my only complaint is
the between song patter. I don't mind an occasional anecdote about her
also famous mom and sister or the self depreciating stories of her life
but the New Age Oprah self worth messages all evening proved grating to
these ears after awhile. I know many female members of the crowd enjoyed
it by the amount of applause and "Yeah Girl!" shout outs but really Wynonna,
stick to what you do best and just sing. For more upcoming shows at the
