CD Review - By Bob

Depending
on the person Sandinista! by The Clash is one of the most celebrated or
loathed records of all time. The original sprawling three record set (six
sides of vinyl at the time) features some good material among the mess
but taxed even the most dedicated fan to make it all the way through the
record. Even The Clash's own the late Joe Strummer was once quoted as saying
according to the liner notes "Sandinista! would have been better as a double
album…or a single album…or an EP.". Make of it what you will but a bevy
of artist think enough of it to have recorded this tribute three disc CD
encompassing the whole works. Most of the artists stick close to the originals
others take liberties with their interpretations. Some of the artists lending
their time to the project include Buffalo Music Hall of Fame member Willie
Nile with his driving version of "Police on My Back", Joe Grushecky and
The Houserockers doing "The Magnificent Seven", Katrina Leskanich of Katrina
and The Waves fame on "Hitsville U.K." and The Smithereens with their take
of "Up In Heaven (Not Only Here)". The Coal Porters, Wreckless Eric, Steve
Wynn, Camper van Beethoven, Amy Rigby and current Broadway star Stew among
many others also add tracks. Check out www.sandinista-guterman.com
