Superstars
Live, the brainchild of husband and wife singing team Richie and Debbie
Derwald, played a fast paced and lively ninety minute set to the delight
of the well attended show at The Masonic Lodge in Cheektowaga on April
20th. Using a mix of old style vaudeville, Broadway show tunes and present
day Las Vegas the show offers something for everyone. Numerous costume
changes add a visual feel to the songs as well. A Phantom cape and mask,
a lace Cher outfit, a sailor and army outfit ala the Andrews Sisters and
the requisite Elvis wig and cape were a few of the costumes trotted out
during the evening. Kermit the frog, a huge foam cowboy hat and a couple
of corny jokes added to the appeal. Richie has a way of morphing into the
artists he is portraying capturing their nuance and signature performance
moves. Debbie lets her beautiful voice and outfits speak more than copying
the artist she portrays. The Derwald’s are accompanied by a crack band
comprised of Angela Wood-vocals, Jamie Dinero-sax/keyboard, Jamie Holka-
guitar, Tom Ciezki-bass/keyboard and John Larson-drums who keep things
rolling thru the costume changes and occasionally step forward to sing
and solo. Guitarist Holka was a WNED Guitar Competition finalist last year.
Some of the evening’s highlights were a medley from “Grease”, rousing Neil
Diamond and Elvis mini sets, a patriotic sing a long on Lee Greenwood’s
“Proud to Be An American” and Debbie Derwald’s take on Cher’s “If I Could
Turn Back Time”. For more on Richie and Debbie Derwald’s Superstars Live
