-Wrapped In A Dream- |
By Bob Silvestri
bobsilvestri@bestofwny.com Mainstays on the jazz scene for well over thirty years now, what makes Spyro Gyra and their latest release Wrapped In A Dream still relevant to both young and old fans? According to Jay Beckenstein founder of the band in Buffalo so many years ago “...this music isn’t about the latest style, it’s about people perfecting a craft. Following fashions is what puts an expiration date on you as an artist.” While their signature sound will always be Beckenstein’s saxophone playing they are not afraid to take chances. This time out we hear voices “Impressions Of Madrid” and “Woogitybop” and a more straight ahead jazz sound on the title cut “Wrapped In A Dream”. They even throw in a cool blues rock guitar intro on the track “After The Storm”. Other tracks to check out include “Spyro Time” and “The Voodooyoodoo”. A welcome reprise and another step forward for the band on this one. For more on Spyro Gyra and Wrapped In A Dream go to www.spyrogyra.com |
