What
is it about Sophie B. Hawkins and her music that is so hard to pin down?
She can rock out but she’s not quite Melissa Etheridge. She can play jazz
but she’s not Diane Krall. And she writes lyrical prose in the same league
as Joni Mitchell and Rickie Lee Jones. So what is it that captivates those
who take the time to seek her music? Her refreshing honesty and her passionate
live performances are a good place to start as is her newest CD titled
Wilderness. The highly polished/produced disc features layers of vocals
and instruments but is more musically adventurous than saccharine sounding.
Never is this more evident than on the CD highlight “Waking On Thin Ice”.
The track “You Make Me High” has a jazz inflected feel with muted trumpet,
piano and upright bass while “Feelin’ Good” allows Hawkins to stretch out
her vocal cords. Other outstanding tracks include “Blue”, the breathy vocal
delivery and piano sounds of “Sweetsexywoman” and “Soul Lover”. To find
