CD Review - By Bob

bobsilvestri@bestofwny.com It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Sean Costello on April 15, 2008- One day before his twenty ninth birthday. This review was written before his passing. Young blues guitarist Sean Costello has released his finest disc to date titled We Can Get Together. No stranger to these parts, Costello has some of the finest blues musicians in the Western New York area as his touring and studio band in bassist Aaron Trubic and drummers Paul Campanella Jr. and Ray Hangen. Trubic also had a hand in the production. The city of Buffalo is even thanked by Costello in the liner notes. Since bursting on the scene around 2000 Costello has released a series of okay but uneven sounding discs but this one finds him very confident in his vocals and guitar work. It doesn't hurt to have a stellar rhythm section anchoring the whole thing down. His vocals are a raspy mix of Leadbelly and the soulful growl of Joe Cocker. "Can't Let Go" has Costello in Philly blue eyed soul mode as Trubic and Campanella lock down tight over some tasty runs by Costello. "Have You No Shame", my favorite track on the disc, could be an outtake from Derek and The Dominoes as it revels in a sloppy lazy blues groove, the gospel blues "Going Home" is about meeting your maker and the afterlife and "Little Birds" a traditional blues dirge round out some of the highlights.
