The band Uncle Tupelo’s first album No Depression and cover version of
The Carter Family song spawned a whole movement, music form and magazine
all with that moniker. Now Dualtone Records in conjunction with the editors
of No Depression magazine have compiled a compilation CD featuring some
of the most notable artists associated with the genre titled No Depression:
What It Sounds Like (Vol.1). The CD kicks off with Johnny Cash rumbling
through “The Time Of The Preacher” with a backing band consisting of Kim
Thayil of Soundgarden, Krist Novoselic of Nirvana and Sean Kinney of Alice
In Chains. Anything with Kelly Willis singing on it always gets my money
and here she does a playful duet with Robbie Fulks on “Parallel Bars”.
Ryan Adams former band Whiskeytown is featured here on a great version
of “Faithless Street” while the late great Doug Sahm performs “Cowboy
Payton Place”. Also of note are Buddy Miller’s “Does My Ring Burn Your
Finger” and Neko Case and Her Boyfriends on “Thrice All American”. Other
artists include Alejandro Escovedo, Kevin Gordon and Lucinda Williams,
Kasey Chambers, Hayseed with Emmylou Harris and Allison Moorer. The all-star
band The Hole Dozen featuring Mark Olson and Victoria Williams also contribute
a song. The disc fittingly ends with The Carter Family version of “No Depression
In Heaven”. Coincidently and gratefully, the CD features no tracks from
Uncle Tupelo, Wilco or Son Volt, the bands most associated with this music
form, this gives a much broader view of the music and the other great artists
keeping this music alive. On the web go to www.dualtone.com
