The latest cd from Jimmy Nalls – Ain’t No Stranger is
a national release with a strong local presence. Nalls is a
former member of the blues group The Nighthawks and with the 80s
band Sea Level which was made up of members of the Allman Brothers during
their hiatus from touring and recording.
Within the last couple of years Nalls was diagnosed with Parkinsons Disease
and now has great difficulties playing the guitar. While he
does play most of the guitar parts himself, he does employ Nashville veterans
Lee Roy Parnell and T. Graham Brown for these sessions, using them
more as guests than stand-ins for his now limited abilites.Harry Stinson, another
Nasville sessions player (drums and vocals) also lends a hand. Chuck Levell
from Sea Level ,The Allman Brothers and currant touring keyboard player
for the Rolling Stones,is also on board for a couple of tracks.
As I said a strong local presence is showcased with Buffalo native and
now Nashville resident Phil Dillion handling the production and lending
his numerous musical talents to all the tracks. Also featured is local blues
artist Willie Schoellkopf on background vocals. Nalls and his band also
tackle the Jim Whitford (The Steam Donkeys) song “Goodluck, Money and Gasoline”
which was a set favorite from Whitfords’ days with his old band The Pinedogs.
Altogether a very listenable cd. Here’s wishing Jimmy Nalls the best of
luck as he deals with Parkinsons Disease. A cruel twist of fate for such
a gifted guitarist. |
