Yes
you know her for her hit "Midnight at the Oasis" but Maria Muldaur has
been playing the blues for the majority of her career. Her latest release
titled Naughty Bawdy & Blue is a collection of songs from classic female
blues divas that have influenced Muldaur and many others. These artists,
among them Victoria Spivey, Sippie Wallace and Ma Rainey, melded blues,
ragtime, folk, jazz and Dixieland music to leave a lasting impression on
generations of musicians. The music was considered risqué for the
time (the 1920's and 30's) with double entendres, innuendo and lyrics from
a strong female perspective that was unheard of before. Highlights here
are "Empty Bed Blues", "A Good Man is Hard to Find", "Handy Man" and "One
Hour Mama". Another artist influenced by these ladies is Bonnie Raitt who
shows up on the track "Separation Blues". On the web www.mariamuldaur.com
