What a pleasant surprise it was to find the new CD from Jeff Black titled Tin Lily in my mailbox. Having read many articles about him I was glad to finally hear his music myself. The singer songwriter’s music is dramatic and his lyrics poignant similar to John Hiatt or Bruce Springsteen. On Tin Lily he surrounds himself with a brilliant cast of musicians including Sam Bush, Kenny Vaughan, Dave Roe, Will Kimbrough and others. The twelve tracks tug at your heart, rock your soul or rise to spiritual levels but never seem cliché. While the whole CD is exceptional a few tracks stand out among them are “Libertine” a rocker, “Free At Last” a righteous piano romp and “A Better Way”.
