Legendary
Deep Purple lead singer Ian Gillian has released a CD with a decidedly
local flavor titled Gillian’s Inn. The cd/dvd dual disc features a photo
of Gillian in front of The Old Pink on Allen Street which became a hangout
of sorts for him while in town recording the disc at Chameleon West/Trackmaster
Studios. Marc Hunt and Allen Farmelo acted as engineers while Nick Blagona
produced, mixed and mastered the disc at his Metalworks Studios in Toronto.
A who’s who of local and national artists help Gillian rip through some
classic rock tunes. The core band here consists of local artists Michael
Lee Jackson, Rodney Appleby, Don Airey and Michael Lee. “Unchain My Brain”,
“Hang Me Out To Dry” and “Speed King” features Joe Satriani on guitar while
Steve Morse displays his fret work on “Men Of War” and “Loving On Borrowed
Time”. Jeff Healey and our own Tommy Z add guitar muscle to “When A Blind
Man Cries” with help from Deep Purple keyboard player Jon Lord. Purple’s
rhythm section of Ian Paice and Roger Glover on drums and bass respectively
keeps time on “Sugar Plum”, “No Laughing In Heaven” and “Trashed”. Tony
Iommi adds guitar on “Trashed” as well. Worth the price here are the tracks
“I’ll Be your Baby Tonight” featuring Joe Elliot along with Charlie Quill,
Ron Davis and Howard Wilson and “Smoke On The Water” with an all star lineup
of Morse, Lord, Paice, Glover, Johnny Rzeznik, Robby Takac, Emil Lattimer
and more. Check out www.gillian.com
