Dave Haynes and John Perry have released a new CD titled Songs From The
Ghostlight. Although the back cover says the CD was recorded live at The
Ghostlight Theater in North Tonawanda, the inside liner notes state that
actually the live tapes were mixed extensively in the studios with harmonies
and instrumentation. Helping to flesh out the sound with Haynes and Perry
are Phil Serwinowski, Casey Green, Gene Thompson and Spud Latz who passed
away four days after recording his parts. The CD is respectfully dedicated
to him.
The fifteen songs all fall into the folk-rock
sound of C.S.& N. or Chris Hillman among others. The choice of materials
is top notch and the renditions here stay faithful to the originals. Among
the selections are Tom Rush’s Merrimack County, John Prine’s Hello In There
and Richard Thompson’s Dimming Of The Day. Highlights include Jelly Roll
Baker, Why Get Up, and Graham Nash’s Simple Man.
Overall not a bad effort that fans
of folk-rock or classic rock would enjoy. The only thing I didn’t understand
was the barking dogs?!!?
