Sometimes
it can be hard to write objectively about an artist when you are also a
fan of their work. Such is the case with Cut ‘N Shoot the new release from
Buffalo native Gurf Morlix. Although he now resides in Austin, TX, where
he is a world renowned and much sought after producer and session player,
he still finds the time to release the occasional solo disc. On this his
third solo release he handles all the duties from mixing, mastering, and
producing to playing all instruments sans drums, courtesy Rick Richards,
to writing or co writing twelve of the thirteen tracks. “Yesterday She
Didn’t” starts off the disc with Morlix’s unmistakable guitar playing and
raspy vocal delivery. The steel guitar is the perfect touch and adds a
Hawaiian feel to the song. The witty country shuffle “Were You Lyin’ Down?”
tells the story of jilted love. “Your Sister” is a tip of the hat to Doug
Sahm, Augie Myers and Tex-Mex music in general. The risqué lyrics
and squeeze box sounding organ puts a smile on your face and makes you
want to hit the dance floor. Brende Fuller and Ron Coy co-wrote “Your Sister”
with Morlix. “Where There Is Smoke”, co-written with Jim Lauderdale, features
Linda McRae on harmony vocals. In the pre gloss Nashville days “Where There
Is Smoke” would have been a huge hit for a husband and wife duet team.
“I’ll Change” an apologetic love song revels with its simplicity and weeping
steel guitar. “Grabbin’ For Love”, the Texas twang of “Me & You” and
“The Whole Truth” with its slide guitar and banjos provide endless enjoyment
as well. Using a musical palette with colors of Hank Sr., Bob Wills and
more Morlix has created his own beautiful masterpiece of sounds. For more
