Buffalo
Music Award winner Diane Kallay has released her debut CD titled Paisley
Blues. A long time veteran of the local music scene Kallay has fronted
such bands as Suspect, Red Rain, Kinship and Urban Renewal. After dabbling
in various styles from country to soul she seems to have found her groove
singing a blues soul hybrid displayed on the disc. Having played at venues
from Thursday At The Square to Artpark and having opened for artist such
as Dave Mason, The Marshall Tucker Band and Shemika Copeland to name a
few, Kallay has refined her voice and chops for her first release. Kallay
does not hog the show here and lets her band (Tom Ryan-drums, George del
Valle-bass, Greg Straka-saxaphone and Rick Johnson-guitars) spread out
and show their chops as well. From the first track “I’m A Good Woman” Kallay
sets the tempo with the big sound and declaration of femininity, a recurring
theme. Willie Dixon’s “I Just Want To Make Love To You” comes across as
coy and pleading in Kallay’s hands as opposed to the testosterone driven
original. She shows her rocker side on “Love To Burn” and her tender side
on the acoustic blues of the title track. Highlight here is “If You Will”
a slow smoky blues number. Kallay does some fine vocal acrobatics on this
one from sexy to soaring. For more on Paisley Blues and Diane Kallay go
