On
their latest disc titled Early 21st Century Blues, the Cowboy Junkies offer
up interpretations of other artists along with a couple originals and traditional
songs. Transforming the songs from their original versions to their own
style they have stripped them down to an intimacy not heard from the band
since their groundbreaking Trinity Sessions CD. The eleven tracks include
takes on Bob Dylan’s “License To Kill”, U2’s “One”, George Harrison’s “Isn’t
It A Pity” and Richie Haven’s “Handout In The Rain”. They also tackle with
aplomb Springsteen’s “Brothers Under The Bridge” and “You’re Missing” and
a great version of John Lennon’s “I Don’t Want To Be A Solider”. The two
original cuts by Michael Timmons, “December Skies” and “This World Of Dreams”
were inspired by the poem The Passing of Arthur by Lord Tennyson. The traditional
“Two Soldiers” and “No More” round out the disc. Bob Egan, ex Wilco and
current Blue Rodeo member makes a guest appearance on pedal steel. For
