Award
winning Canadian singer songwriter Bruce Cockburn played to a packed house
at The Tralf Music Hall in Downtown Buffalo on March 20th 2007. Performing
solo he enthralled the audience with a two hour set of tender emotional
songs along with a dose of politically charged material from his long career.
Changing between a variety of acoustic guitars and employing ample use
of delay, feedback and reverb he showed himself to be a deft and nimble
guitarist as well. Starting the set with a beautiful rendering of “Last
Night Of The World” you knew the night would be magical. Between songs
Cockburn spun yarns about his songwriting process and his travels to political
hotspots in Central America to recent trips to Baghdad and the Middle East.
This led to one of the night’s most intense moments as Cockburn launched
into “This Is Baghdad” a song about the troubling situation over there.
Radio and fan favorites “Wondering Where The Lions Are” and “Lover’s In
A Dangerous Time” were met with deserved enthusiasm from the crowd. The
one two punch of “If A Tree Falls” and “Mystery” closed the set on very
high marks. Returning for an encore he was met with calls from the crowd
for probably his most well known song “If I Had A Rocket Launcher”. He
opted out with a story about a concert in Europe and having thousands of
people shouting the lyric from the song “… that son of a bitch would die”
and the chilling effect it had and that perhaps the true peaceful meaning
of the song had been lost on the audience. “Peggy’s Kitchen Wall” and a
smooth blues instrumental were instead included in a four song encore.
