....ZZ
Top, that "lil ole band from Texas", roared into a standing room only Event
Center in the Seneca Niagara Casino in Niagara Falls, NY on September 19,
2007. The ninety minute hits packed show has not really changed much in
the last few years and doesn't need to change. The crowd came to hear those
radio classics that the band (Billy Gibbons-guitar and vocals, Dusty Hill-bass
and vocals and Frank Beard-drums) has been playing for thirty plus years.
At times you swear these guys could do this in their sleep, instead they
smile, they mug, they joke with the crowd and play the living daylights
out of their instruments. Gibbons is always a tasteful guitar player (he
is one of the best and influential guitarists of his generation) and the
relentless rhythm section of Hill and Beard keeps things from being stoic
or over rehearsed.
....The
usual crowd favorites were played including the opening three song salvo
of "Under Pressure", "Waiting For The Bus" and "Jesus Just Left Chicago"
along with "Cheap Sunglasses" and a killer "I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide". Deeper
cuts included "Pincushion", "Heard It On The X", "Pearl Necklace" and "Just
Got Paid" all which elicited an enthusiastic audience response. "Rough
Boy" a slightly syrupy ballad was made righteous with a blistering solo
from Gibbons. Highlight of the show were the back to back numbers "Blue
Jean Blues" a slow smoldering blues number from early in the band's career
and spirited romp thru Hendrix's "Foxy Lady". They showed their virtuosity
by closing the show with a run thru their biggest hits with "Gimmie All
Your Loving", "Sharp Dressed Man", "Legs" and "Tube Snake Boogie" before
ending the night with "La Grange" and "Tush". They may be grey beards but
ZZ Top are no dinosaurs. For more upcoming shows at The Seneca-Niagara
