Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes
Bear’s Den Seneca Niagara Casino, Niagara Falls
March 17, 2017

Concert Review - by Bob Silvestri
bobsilvestri@bestofwny.com

Southside Johnny & The Asbury JukesThe Bear's Den located inside the Seneca Niagara Casino in Niagara Falls, NY welcomed Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes for a special St. Patrick's Day show on March 17, 2017. The full house was treated to selections from throughout The Jukes catalog including songs from their current release Soultime!. Southside Johnny, resplendent in an Irish soccer (football) jersey, and the band hit the stage promptly at eight and entertained with a high energy ninety minute set. Kicking off with "Looking for a Good Time" from Soultime! they slid smoothly into the Jukes classic "I Played the Fool". After asking for requests and getting the varied responses from the crowd the band offered up their version of the Left Banke classic "Walk Away Renee" now a regular part of the Jukes repertoire. Other crowd pleasers included "Love on the Wrong Side of Town", "Baby's Gone For Southside Johnny & The Asbury JukesGood", "Talk To Me", "This Time It's For Real" and a spirited version of "The Fever". A couple of blues numbers, "Got My Mojo Working" and "Big Boss Man" dedicated to the late great James Cotton, let Southside show off his skills on the harp. The always mischievous Southside also found time to sing a snippet of "Danny Boy", joke with the folks in the crowd, stroll through the audience singing and to leave the stage and dance with an usher after she tried to have dancing crowd members return to their seats. But soon it was time to wrap it up and call it an evening. The Jukes blasted through "IDon't Want to Go Home" and "Having a Party" to finish the set before returning for an encore and closing the show with "Working Too Hard". First WardFirst Ward
- Live At Raven -

First Ward is the latest project from Buffalo based artist Zak Ward and Live at Raven is a five song EP teaser as the band (Zak Ward-guitar/vocals, Dave Harris-guitar, Josh Mullin-bass and Steve Tripi-drums) finishes recording their full length album. Ward and Mullin's previous bands include Son of The Son and Last Conservative respectively. The title refers to the studio where the EP was recorded with Mike Zeis, John Richter and Sean Szymanski on production duty. Jay Zubricky and Allen Farmelo added their mixing and mastering skills at GCR Audio and The Snow Farm. The disc also gave the band a chance to go out and road test the material before a live audience in between studio sessions. The five songs are an invigorating mix of alternative rock, pop and bits of jazz and folk. Musicianship and attention to details in songwriting, arrangements and production is abundant here. Stand out tracks include "Clapper's Bell", "Lost" and "You're Not Alone". Jess ChizukJess Chizuk
- Lehigh Valley Line -

Buffalo based singer songwriter Jess Chizuk is a rising star in a crowded field of artists. At 22 years old she is already an award winning seasoned veteran of the music scene having won the 2014 Buffalo Music Hall of Fame's Jack Yellen Foundation's songwriting contest, Buffalo Music Award for Best Solo Act and numerous national awards for her song writing. So what do you do for an encore? You get back to what you do best and add a whole new slew of songs to your repertoire and release a new album titled Lehigh Valley Line. The eight song album is a minimalist affair with Chizuk's guitar and vocals laid bare with minor accompaniment (Greg Zeis adds guitar on three tracks and Pat Georger adds piano on one) and overdubs. The album was recorded, mixed and mastered by Ken Rutkowski at Outer Limit Recording Studio. Highlights include "Steady as the Rain", "August Carnival"; the title track "Lehigh Valley Line", the BMHOF/Yellen Contest winner "China Plates" and "Guilty Pleasures" featuring some nice guitar work from Zeis. Stress DollsStress Dolls
- self titled -

Finally a breath of fresh air from the corporate drivel turned out for the public's mass consumption, a band whose unique sound is unbridled by genres, definitions or the sameness of the sounds of radio and the Top 40 charts. Ladies and gentlemen The Stress Dolls a Buffalo based group whose loud in your face no illusions or apologies self titled EP has hit the racks of your record store. Fronted by Chelsea O'Donnell (guitar/vocals) along with band mates Brian Siklinski (lead guitar), TJ Luckman (bass) and Madison Rich (drums) they knocked out the disc at GCR Audio with master knob turner Justin Rose handling the board. The disc kicks off with the funky and quirky "Crazy" followed by the guitar driven "Pills" followed by "Swollen" and "Curves & Edges". Consisting of Dan McCormick (vocals/guitar), Joe Morganti (lead guitar), Mike Tomasulo (drums/vocals) and John Vaughan (bass/vocals) the group has forged a sound that sets them apart from the large number of alternative band on the scene today. Buffalo Blues Benefit For VeteransHome-Buffalo Blues Benefit For Veterans
- Various Artists -

Buffalo Music Hall of Fame member Bob James has always been a towering presence on the Buffalo music landscape. In addition to solid musical chops, studio wizardry skills and mentoring music to school age children James has a knack from assembling compilation albums from Buffalo based artists for various charities. Buffalo Public Schools, Music is Art and the Food Bank of WNY are just some of the non profits that James has supported over the years. His latest worthy call to arms is the large segment of homeless veterans in WNY. For this project James has assembled stalwarts from the Buffalo blues scene for an incredible album titled Home-Buffalo Blues Benefit For Veterans. The twelve tracks feature Peter Case, Miller & The Other Sinners, Randle and The Late Night Scandals, Mick Hayes, Doug Yeomans, Dave Constantino, Freightrain, Caitlin Koch, Savannah King, Bob James and Friends, The Love Parade and the Buffalo Blues Benefit Band. All the music is masterfully done and ranges from folk blues to Delta Blues to blues rock and every shuffle and blues riff known to humanity thrown in to boot. Each of the tunes represents a piece of the story about a returning veteran told about in the liner notes and the songs have been sequenced to tell that story but each are strong as individual tunes from each artist. Another note is the sheer talent and the amount of talented guitar slingers and lady singers the WNY area has to offer. For information about Home-Buffalo Blues Benefit For Veterans including how to get involved or to purchase the album go to www.BuffaloBlues.org

Johnny Pisano's Punk Rock PizzeriaJohnny Pisano's Punk Rock Pizzeria
- Everybody Gets a Slice! -

For those of you who have witnessed any of the live shows in the last few years from our own Prodigal Son Willie Nile know of the towering presence of charisma, musical chops and a formidable force of nature that is Nile's bassist Johnny Pisano. Those who haven't can find out about it with his new album Johnny Pisano's Punk Rock Pizzeria-Everybody Gets a Slice!! a greasy slab of molten cheese, dough and punk bravado straight outta Brooklyn. He employees Matt Hogan (guitars) and Alex Alexander (drums) from Nile's band along with guests Handsome Dick Manitoba (The Dictators), Tommy Mandel, Lee Boice, Jon Weber and Willie Nile among others to create this symphony of serenades. This nine slice pie (Wait. What? I thought they came in eights) was produced by Johnny Pi along with Alexander, Hogan and James Frazee assisting. Lots of good stuff to mangia on here with no effects of agita in sight. Highlights include "The Know It Alls", "Pilicious Bitches" where Pisano extols all things pizza, the self explanatory nature of both "Midlife Crisis" and "All F***ed From Growing Up", "The Streets of Sao Paulo" and the over the top lyrical madness of "Maloveilove". The album closes with a version Nile's own "One Guitar Mon" overhauled here into a Reggae one drop version that is astonishing and features a cameo by Nile. Yah Mon, Irie! Duke Robillard and his All-Star ComboDuke Robillard and his All-Star Combo
- Blues Full Circle -

Duke Robillard has released a new album titled Blues Full Circle a thirteen song collection of outstanding blues featuring Robillard's fretwork and one of a kind guitar tone and his up to the task All-Star Combo (Bruce Bears-piano/Hammond Organ, Brad Hallen-bass and Mark Teixeira-drums). One of the most extraordinary guitarists around from his founding days of Roomful of Blues to stints with The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Bob Dylan and others along with a long distinguished solo career Robillard went through a rough patch during the making of the album as a torn rotator cuff took him out of commission for a year. During his recovery he rediscovered his passion for photography and painting. One of those painting adorns the cover on Blues Full Circle. Robillard wrote ten of the thirteen tracks here and they include some dusted off from his Roomful days 30 to 45 years ago to recently written songs hence the full circle reference. Highlights include "Lay a Little Lovin' on Me" a nice walking blues number, the slow blues moaner "Mourning Dove", "Fool About My Money" and "Worth Waiting For". A trio of special guests helps out Robillard as well. Former Roomful vocalist Sugar Ray Norcia stops by to lend his vocals to the horn blasting blues stomper "Last Night", Kelley Hunt adds piano and vocal to her own "The Mood Room" her ode to Duke's home studio and Jimmie Vaughan and Duke trade guitar licks on "Shufflin' and Scufflin'" with Roomful sax player Doug James adding his horn to the mix. Beth GarnerBeth Garner
- Snake Farm -

Nashville based roots and blues singer/guitarist Beth Garner has released a new album titled Snake Farm. The Texas native moved to Nashville a few years back and promptly got a gig with The Red Elvises and headed out on tour with the band. After returning to Tennessee she found her way to Broadway the musical and magical strip of Honky Tonks and music bars located in downtown Nashville. After honing her chops further she struck out on her own to rave reviews. On Snake Farm Garner wrote or co wrote six of the seven tracks and produced the disc with Randy Kohrs at Slack Key Studios. Helping Garner are Rory Hoffman (sax/keys/rhythm guitar), Wes Little (drums), Steve Forrest (bass) and Angela Primm and Gale Mayes (background vocals). Lots of good stuff here including the slow funky blues of "Alright by Me (Mr. Fisher)" with soulful background vocals from Primm and Mayes, the harp drenched "Backroads Freddie", "Drop Down", "Used To Be" a big blues rocker about a long lost love and the hard charging blues rock number "Wish I Was". Chip Taylor AKA James Wesley VoightChip Taylor AKA James Wesley Voight
- A Song I Can Live With -

Legendary songwriter Chip Taylor has released a new album titled A Song I Can Live With. Yes, the Voight family name includes Taylor's brother actor Jon Voight and his niece Angelina Jolie but Taylor has just as lofty credentials. In the Sixties Taylor wrote the hits "Wild Thing" (The Troggs and Jimi Hendrix), "Angel of The Morning" (Merrilee Rush and Juice Newton) and "I Can't Let Go" (The Hollies and Linda Ronstadt) along with a string of others for Janis Joplin, Frank Sinatra, Aretha Franklin and other artists. In the mid Seventies Taylor walked away from the music business to pursue other endeavors. He returned in the Nineties with steady touring and album releases and working with new artists including Carrie Rodriguez. His dark brooding vocals and stream of conscious lyrics are full of stark images that make the listener pay attention to the narrative of the songs. On A Song I Can Live With check out "Until It Hurts" where Taylor names checks everyone and everything including David Bowie, Lou Reed and Eric Andersen, the piano ballad "Joan, Joan, Joan", "Senorita Falling Down", the title cut "A Song I Can Live With" and "Save Your Blues And Your Money". Castle CreekCastle Creek
-…The Only Life -

Castle Creek is the name that Kim Monroe uses to record and perform under with a rotating cast of musicians. Monroe hails from the Syracuse area and has been making inroads with her songwriting, performing and her angelic voice. She has collaborated with Buffalo's own Robby Takac along with John Popper from Blues Traveler and others. On her latest release tilted …The Only Life, Monroe enlists Chris Eves to handle guitars, vocals, keys, bass and drums while Monroe handles vocals, guitar, bass, keys, percussion and cello. Bruce Monroe shows up to play lap steel as well. Monroe has stated that a lot of her songs start out in the folk format before morphing into a country blues rock hybrid. Monroe's vocals are the highlight here along with some razor sharp fret work from Eves in the SRV/Jeff Beck style. Things kick off in fine style with "The Only Life I've Ever Known" and the downright funky "Brand New Blues". Other tracks that leave you wanting more include "New Reality" a guitar scorcher, the pop inflected "Glass Heart", "Brace For The Heartache" and the film noir smokiness of "The Saddest Love Song" all powered by Monroe's vocals. Eves handles vocals on a couple tracks including "Dragging My Heart Around", "New Normal", "Bigger Than The Two Of Us" and "Flown Away". Kim Monroe and Castle Creek is without a doubt a star on the rise and her album …The Only Life is a big step along the way. Check out www.castlecreekband.com and www.facebook.com/CastleCreekBand

Paul MarkPaul Mark
- Heartfull of Soul - (CD single)

Musical chameleon Paul Mark has released a track from his upcoming album a reworking of the Yardbirds' classic "Heartfull of Soul". First charting for the Yardbirds in 1965 the song was written by Graham Gouldman who would go on to help form 10CC and co wrote that band's hits "I'm Not in Love" and "The Things We Do for Love". Here Mark slows down the tempo and invokes the great tone from the spaghetti westerns soundtrack days. He plays the track on a Contessa arch top a vintage guitar that has rich tones and harmonics.
