A Night of Symphonic Rock
Events Center - Seneca Niagara Casino
April 28, 2017

Concert Review - by Bob Silvestri
bobsilvestri@bestofwny.com

A Night of Symphonic RockA Night of Symphonic Rock, a melding of classic rock artists performing with a full orchestra, paid a visit to the Events Center located in the Seneca-Niagara Casino in Niagara Falls, NY on April 28, 2017. The show featured four classic rock all-stars, Lou Gramm of Foreigner, Mickey Thomas of Starship, Terri Nunn of the band Berlin and Robin McAuley of Survivor, augmented by a band of veteran touring and studio aces from Las Vegas and Los Angeles and a full orchestra. The first set of the two hour show featured the band warming up with Journey's "Separate Ways" before giving way to McAuley and a blistering version of Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir". It was on this song that you realized just how good this mix of orchestra and rock band was going to sound. He also performed another Journey song "Faithfully" and the Eagles "Hotel California" before performing his signature tune "Eye of The Tiger". Next up was Terri Nunn who stole the show with her voice and timeless good looks. Her too short set consisted of Berlin's "No More Tears" and "The Metro" before closing with a soaring "Take My Breath Away" from the Top Gun soundtrack.
A Night of Symphonic RockAfter a brief intermission Mickey Thomas from Starship hit the stage and offered a few songs from his vast catalog of hits including "Find Your Way Back", "Sara", "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" and "We Built This City". Rochester native Lou Gramm, one of the finest rock voices of all time and still in fine form, brought out the hits with "Feels like the First Time", "I Wanna Know What Love Is" replete with requisite audience sing along, "Cold as Ice" and "Jukebox Hero" before closing with "Hot Blooded". The four singers returned for a group rendition of Journey's "Don't Stop Believing" that sent the crowd home happy. A highly polished show made better by the artists and their timeless music A Night of Symphonic Rock is a must see show.

Buddy Guy and Tom Hambridge
Center for the Arts - Suny@Buffalo
April 21, 2017

Concert Review - by Bob Silvestri
bobsilvestri@bestofwny.com

Buddy Guy and Tom HambridgeLegendary guitarist Buddy Guy made a stop at UB's Center for the Arts on April 21, 2017 touring to support his latest album Born to Play Guitar. While Guy's shows hasn't changed much over the last few tours at 80 years old he can still put on a show for the ages whether it is your first time seeing him or someone like myself who has seen him multiple times. He is truly the last of the great original bluesmen. His influence on others is evident throughout the show as Guy plays songs and snippets from the likes of Hendrix, Clapton and SRV to name a few. Guy can also show boat with the best by playing the guitar behind his back, with a drumstick, a towel and even by rubbing the guitar on his shirt and backside of his pants. He is a great story teller as well with tales of early Buffalo appearances with Junior Wells and Muddy Waters, of growing up poor in Louisiana and of his mother. He also has a mischievous playful side as when he admonished the crowd for missing their sing along cue or asking a gentlemen to "Shut the f*** up" as he was talking to a lady in the crowd. One of the anticipated Buddy Guy and Tom Hambridgemoments of the show comes when Guy takes a stroll though the entire floor of the venue while playing the guitar on his signature hit "Damn Right I Got The Blues". He even stopped to let a wheelchair bound patron take a few strums on the guitar during the song. Other highlights from the show include "Slippin' In", the tender John Hiatt penned ballad "Fells Like Rain", "Hoochie Coochie Man" and "Skin Deep" with Tom Hambridge helping out on vocals. Buffalo born Grammy winner Hambridge opened the show with a nice set. Hambridge has been working closely with Guy the last few years as producer, performer and touring partner and it has proved a fruitful collaboration for both. Hambridge set consisted of songs he wrote for others, "I Got Your Country Right Here" (Gretchen Wilson), "The Fixer" (George Thorogood) and "It Hurt So Bad" (Susan Tedeschi) along with a few tracks from his solo albums including "Shoebox", "Nineteen" and "Upside of Lonely".

Baseball in BuffaloBaseball in Buffalo
- Paul Langendorfer -

Now that summer and baseball season are in full swing (pun intended) what better time to reflect on Buffalo's rich baseball heritage than now with this new book from author Paul Langendorfer titled Baseball in Buffalo. Whether you are a hardcore baseball fan or a casual one of the game there is something for all to enjoy in this book. Richly detailed with photos many from the collection of the Buffalo History Museum it features team photos, action shots, programs, tickets and an insight into the dress, times and looks of Buffalo from around the Civil War era through the War Memorial Stadium days, the filming of the movie The Natural to today and Coca Cola Field. Detailed text describes each photo for better understanding. Also detailed are the local amateur leagues over the years throughout the city including the bygone days of the factory leagues, high schools, the city's municipal parks leagues, girl's teams and the 1929 W.H. Jones African American team consisting of members of the Urban League and Michigan Avenue YMCA. Langendorfer's book is a time travel through Buffalo's baseball history over the years. Baseball in Buffalo is available at your local retailer or by visiting www.arcadiapublishing.com

Imperfect UnionImperfect Union
- Chuck Raasch -

There are a lot lesser known stories from the Civil War besides the battles, politics and ideology that is usually discussed and dissected. Some are of a more personal nature. One such story involves a Buffalo angle and a heart wrenching story at that. Sam Wilkeson from the prominent Buffalo family and at the time a New York Times correspondent is dispatched to Gettysburg to cover the epic battle. On his way to Gettysburg he learned that his son Bayard a Union artillery lieutenant has been wounded on the first day of the battle. The elder Wilkeson would have to wait until the guns were silent to search for his son only to find out he had died at the town's poorhouse. Sitting next to his dead son Wilkeson wrote one of the greatest and eloquent battlefield reports ever written.

The book explores the story of father and son and their bond, reconstructs Bayard's wounding and death in battle and of Sam's search for his dead son in the bloody aftermath of the battle. Raasch also delves into battlefield medicine for the era, Civil War journalism and the sacrifices of the nation during the war. Imperfect Union tells a seldom told tale of heroism, sadness, mystery and myth about the Civil War and one of Buffalo's founding families. Imperfect Union by Chuck Raasch is available on Amazon and at your local book retailer.

Positively Bob-Willie Nile Sings Bob DylanWillie Nile
- Positively Bob - Willie Nile Sings Bob Dylan

On his latest album Buffalo's own Willie Nile gives a heartfelt tribute to one of his biggest influences with a ten track tribute titled Positively Bob-Willie Nile Sings Bob Dylan. Helping out Willie on the album are Matt Hogan and Johnny Pisano from his regular touring band, James Maddock (check out his solo work-awesome), Andy Burton, Aaron Comess, Leslie Mendelson and Frankie Lee. The artists along with Nile brings the energy of his live shows to the songs for a modern updating in some cases other follow their original arrangement . Highlights include "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall", "I Want You", "Love Minus Zero/No Limit", "Every Grain Of Sand" and "You Ain't Goin' Nowhere". The album closes with "Abandoned Love" a rare Dylan track recorded in 1975 but left unreleased until the 1985 Biograph box set. Dylan only performed the song only once live in 1975 and never again. Nile brings new light to this should have been Dylan classic. Check out www.willienile.com and www.facebook.com/willie.nile for more information on how to purchase Positively Bob-Willie Nile Sings Bob Dylan and for upcoming Willie Nile tour dates.

Paige CoraPaige Cora
- Instant In Time -

Paige Cora, former vocalist for The Ruby Spirit, has released a new four song EP titled Instant In Time recorded at Black Rock Studios in The Sportsmen's Tavern musical complex. Cora recorded the album with some of Buffalo's finest musicians including Kent Weber on bass, Rob Lynch on drums, Frank Grizanti on guitar and Joe Rozler on keyboards. Jae Daniels recorded and mixed the album and beautifully captured the magic being made in the studio. The highlight is Cora's angelic and ethereal sounding voice. All four tracks shine with "Echoes" being my personal favorite. Its mellow jazzy vibe is mesmerizing and warrants repeated listening. "Forest Pine", the title track "Instant In Time" and "The Good Side Of Desire" round out the disc. For more information about Paige Cora and her new release Instant In Time check out www.paigecora.com

Super AmericanSuper American
- Disposable -

Buffalo based indie alternative group Super American have released a new album titled Disposable. Band members Matt and Pat enlisted master knob turner Jay Zubricky to engineer and mix the seven song album and he gives the band a nice clean guitar driven sound that's radio ready. Album highlights include "Feeling Better", "Dearly Beloved", "Rebel's Yell" and the bold rocker "Dumb". Check out www.facebook.com/supamerican and www.takethistoheartrecords.com for information on upcoming shows and how to purchase their new album Disposable.

FreightrainFreightrain
- Outside Ourselves -

Buffalo music legend Robert "Freightrain" Parker and his band Freightrain have released a new album titled Outside Ourselves a nine track selection of smooth blues and rock. Backed by his stellar band consisting of Grace Lougen (guitars), Greg Leech (keys) and Damone Jackson (drums), Parker also gets some assistance from Harry Graser (keys),Toney Rhodes (keys), Bobby Militello (sax), Ken Parker (sax) and Megan Brown, Grace Stumberg and many others on back ground vocals. The album kicks off with the mellow instrumental "Elijah" written for Parker's son. Another instrumental "Dark Season Blues" a nice blues shuffle, "Better Man", "Wake Up", "I Still Believe" and "You Found Me" are all standouts as is the title track "Outside Ourselves" and its positive message of "we must be the change" that resonates with the times. The album closes with "Elijah (Reprise)" a nice bookend to close out the album. Check out www.robertfreightrainparker.com for information on how to purchase Outside Ourselves or to find out where Freightrain are appearing.

D.L. DuncanD.L. Duncan
- self titled -

Buffalo born and now Nashville based D.L. Duncan has released a new self titled album featuring his sandpaper smooth vocals, great fret chops and exquisite songwriting. Duncan has made a name for himself in Nashville with his songwriting and playing and he brings in a host of his friends to help out here. Among them are guitarist Sonny Landreth, the legendary Delbert McClinton on harmonica, David Hood on bass, Vince Santoro on the kit, Kevin McKendree on piano and B3 organ, The McCrary Sisters adding sweet background vocals, Guthrie Trapp on guitar and mandolin, Lynn Williams on percussion and David Pinkston on pedal steel. Highlights include "I Ain't The Sharpest Marble" a nice shuffle blues featuring Duncan's self depreciating lyrical wit, "You Just Don't Never Know" featuring McClinton's scorching harp playing and The McCrary Sisters adding a churchy touch on background vocals and "Your Own Best Friend" where Landreth adds some stinging slide guitar. "I Know A Good Thing" which Duncan wrote with Curtis Salgado, the somewhat autobiographical "Orange Beach Blues" and the slow blues burner "St. Valentine's Day Blues" that shows off some tasty picking from Duncan all shine as well. The album closes with "All I Have To Offer You Is Love" a tender heart on your sleeve love song. For more on D.L. Duncan visit www.DLDuncan.com or www.facebook.com/DL-Duncan

Eric Van HoutenEric Van Houten

Eric Van Houten is your hometown boy makes good story. Now based in Nashville Van Houten has worked his way up the country music ladder by playing a seemingly endless string of concert dates and honing his songwriting chops. As he works on a new full length album Van Houten has released a three song self titled EP in the mean time. The leadoff single "Do You Wanna" has already been added to over sixty country music radio outlets including Buffalo's WYRK. The up tempo rocker with sing along chorus seems destined for the top. The seductive "Get In My Arms" and the big arena styled rocker "Runaway Love" round out the EP. Keep your eye on this rising star that is sure to make Buffalo proud. The TraditionalThe Traditional
- The Queen of Heaven -

I've always had a soft spot for The Traditional. Their live shows almost always border on a controlled chaos and mayhem with the bands performance and crowd interaction. But what sets them apart from other bands of their ilk is the depth of the lyrics around the locomotive like sound of the music. Their new release on Anchor Eighty Four Records titled The Queen of Heaven goes even deeper. Introspective lyrics about lost love, shattered friendships, personal transformation and redemption abound among the six tracks. Now down to a three piece the band (Anthony Musior-bass/vocals, Mike Bienias-guitar/bkgr vocals and Jon Coric-drums/bkgr vocals) has soldiered on and have released some of their strongest work to date. Bienias shines throughout the album with tasty and original solos and fills while the rhythm section of Musior and Coric supply the thunder. Musior's scream along vocals and The Traditional's unique background harmonies were all captured, produced, mixed and engineered by the nimble fingers of Jay Zubricky. Highlights include the opener "Parlez Vous-Francais?" a heavy rocker and "Thirty" that both show Bienias' outstanding guitar playing, "She Don't Know", "Enough" and "Kerosene". For more information about The Traditional including tour dates and how to purchase the new album The Queen of Heaven visit www.facebook.com/thetraditional or anchoreightyfour.com

Davey ODavey O
- A Bright Horizon Line -

Poet Robert Frost could not have had Davey O in mind when he famously wrote "…and miles to go before I sleep" but that sums up Davey's music, touring and performance schedule. A human machine of energy and motion he seems capable of tiring the youngest of those who perform and tour. This modern day troubadour has released another stellar album of Americana Roots music from the heart and the head. The ten tracks, nine originals and one cover, find Davey handling vocals, guitars, harmonica and bass along with a multitude of musicians who share his vision among them Tracy Grammer -vocals, Eric Lee-mandolin and fiddle, Matt Nakoa-piano and Pat Wictor-dobro. The album was recorded at Fox Run Studios in Sudbury, MA. by Neale Eckstein who beautifully captures the magic of the performances and songs. Highlights include "The Easy Work", "For Them", "OK" with some nice piano playing from Nakoa, "Coming Home", "Nothing Could Go Wrong" and his ode to his hometown "To Buffalo". Also of note is a first take live recording of the Crowded House classic "Don't Dream It's Over". The album seems to form a cinematic passage that is rewarding for both the artist and the listener. For more on Davey O including tour dates and how to purchase A Bright Horizon Line check out www.daveyo.com or www.facebook.com/dave.ostrowski.54

First WardFirst Ward
- Live At Raven -

First Ward is the latest project from Buffalo based artist Zak Ward and Live at Raven is a five song EP teaser as the band (Zak Ward-guitar/vocals, Dave Harris-guitar, Josh Mullin-bass and Steve Tripi-drums) finishes recording their full length album. Ward and Mullin's previous bands include Son of The Son and Last Conservative respectively. The title refers to the studio where the EP was recorded with Mike Zeis, John Richter and Sean Szymanski on production duty. Jay Zubricky and Allen Farmelo added their mixing and mastering skills at GCR Audio and The Snow Farm. The disc also gave the band a chance to go out and road test the material before a live audience in between studio sessions. The five songs are an invigorating mix of alternative rock, pop and bits of jazz and folk. Musicianship and attention to details in songwriting, arrangements and production is abundant here. Stand out tracks include "Clapper's Bell", "Lost" and "You're Not Alone". For more information about First Ward and their new EP Live at Raven visit www.firstwardmusic.com or www.facebook.com/firstwardmusic

Jess ChizukJess Chizuk
- Lehigh Valley Line -

Buffalo based singer songwriter Jess Chizuk is a rising star in a crowded field of artists. At 22 years old she is already an award winning seasoned veteran of the music scene having won the 2014 Buffalo Music Hall of Fame's Jack Yellen Foundation's songwriting contest, Buffalo Music Award for Best Solo Act and numerous national awards for her song writing. So what do you do for an encore? You get back to what you do best and add a whole new slew of songs to your repertoire and release a new album titled Lehigh Valley Line. The eight song album is a minimalist affair with Chizuk's guitar and vocals laid bare with minor accompaniment (Greg Zeis adds guitar on three tracks and Pat Georger adds piano on one) and overdubs. The album was recorded, mixed and mastered by Ken Rutkowski at Outer Limit Recording Studio. Highlights include "Steady as the Rain", "August Carnival"; the title track "Lehigh Valley Line", the BMHOF/Yellen Contest winner "China Plates" and "Guilty Pleasures" featuring some nice guitar work from Zeis. For more information about Jess Chizuk and her new album Lehigh Valley Line check out www.jesschizukmusic.com or www.facebook.com/jessica.chizuk

Stress DollsStress Dolls

Finally a breath of fresh air from the corporate drivel turned out for the public's mass consumption, a band whose unique sound is unbridled by genres, definitions or the sameness of the sounds of radio and the Top 40 charts. Ladies and gentlemen The Stress Dolls a Buffalo based group whose loud in your face no illusions or apologies self titled EP has hit the racks of your record store. Fronted by Chelsea O'Donnell (guitar/vocals) along with band mates Brian Siklinski (lead guitar), TJ Luckman (bass) and Madison Rich (drums) they knocked out the disc at GCR Audio with master knob turner Justin Rose handling the board. The disc kicks off with the funky and quirky "Crazy" followed by the guitar driven "Pills" followed by "Swollen" and "Curves & Edges". A respite for the ears check out The Stress Dolls at www.stressdollsmusic.com and www.facebook.com/stressdollsmusic

Kill The ClockKill The Clock
- To All My Friends & Family -

Alternative rock outfit Kill The Clock have released a five song EP titled To All My Friends & Family a high energy debut from this Buffalo based group. Consisting of Dan McCormick (vocals/guitar), Joe Morganti (lead guitar), Mike Tomasulo (drums/vocals) and John Vaughan (bass/vocals) the group has forged a sound that sets them apart from the large number of alternative band on the scene today. Loud guitars a gale force rhythm section and anthemic sing along verses has the band poised on the brink of a break out. The tracks "Rookie With Potential", "Welcome Back Weekend" and the title cut "To All My Friends and Family" with guest vocals from Aiden Licker all stand out. RJ DeMarco on the board handled technical duties at Skyway Studios while BMHOF member Armand John Petri mastered the disc. Buffalo Blues Benefit For VeteransHome-Buffalo Blues Benefit For Veterans
- Various Artists -

Buffalo Music Hall of Fame member Bob James has always been a towering presence on the Buffalo music landscape. In addition to solid musical chops, studio wizardry skills and mentoring music to school age children James has a knack from assembling compilation albums from Buffalo based artists for various charities. Buffalo Public Schools, Music is Art and the Food Bank of WNY are just some of the non profits that James has supported over the years. His latest worthy call to arms is the large segment of homeless veterans in WNY. For this project James has assembled stalwarts from the Buffalo blues scene for an incredible album titled Home-Buffalo Blues Benefit For Veterans. The twelve tracks feature Peter Case, Miller & The Other Sinners, Randle and The Late Night Scandals, Mick Hayes, Doug Yeomans, Dave Constantino, Freightrain, Caitlin Koch, Savannah King, Bob James and Friends, The Love Parade and the Buffalo Blues Benefit Band. All the music is masterfully done and ranges from folk blues to Delta Blues to blues rock and every shuffle and blues riff known to humanity thrown in to boot. Each of the tunes represents a piece of the story about a returning veteran told about in the liner notes and the songs have been sequenced to tell that story but each are strong as individual tunes from each artist. Another note is the sheer talent and the amount of talented guitar slingers and lady singers the WNY area has to offer. For information about Home-Buffalo Blues Benefit For Veterans including how to get involved or to purchase the album go to www.BuffaloBlues.org

Johnny Pisano's Punk Rock PizzeriaJohnny Pisano's Punk Rock Pizzeria
- Everybody Gets a Slice! -

For those of you who have witnessed any of the live shows in the last few years from our own Prodigal Son Willie Nile know of the towering presence of charisma, musical chops and a formidable force of nature that is Nile's bassist Johnny Pisano. Those who haven't can find out about it with his new album Johnny Pisano's Punk Rock Pizzeria-Everybody Gets a Slice!! a greasy slab of molten cheese, dough and punk bravado straight outta Brooklyn. He employees Matt Hogan (guitars) and Alex Alexander (drums) from Nile's band along with guests Handsome Dick Manitoba (The Dictators), Tommy Mandel, Lee Boice, Jon Weber and Willie Nile among others to create this symphony of serenades. This nine slice pie (Wait. What? I thought they came in eights) was produced by Johnny Pi along with Alexander, Hogan and James Frazee assisting. Lots of good stuff to mangia on here with no effects of agita in sight. Highlights include "The Know It Alls", "Pilicious Bitches" where Pisano extols all things pizza, the self explanatory nature of both "Midlife Crisis" and "All F***ed From Growing Up", "The Streets of Sao Paulo" and the over the top lyrical madness of "Maloveilove". The album closes with a version Nile's own "One Guitar Mon" overhauled here into a Reggae one drop version that is astonishing and features a cameo by Nile. Yah Mon, Irie!
