A Night of Symphonic Rock
Events Center - Seneca Niagara Casino
April 28, 2017

Concert Review - by Bob Silvestri

A Night of Symphonic RockA Night of Symphonic Rock, a melding of classic rock artists performing with a full orchestra, paid a visit to the Events Center located in the Seneca-Niagara Casino in Niagara Falls, NY on April 28, 2017. The show featured four classic rock all-stars, Lou Gramm of Foreigner, Mickey Thomas of Starship, Terri Nunn of the band Berlin and Robin McAuley of Survivor, augmented by a band of veteran touring and studio aces from Las Vegas and Los Angeles and a full orchestra. The first set of the two hour show featured the band warming up with Journey's "Separate Ways" before giving way to McAuley and a blistering version of Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir". It was on this song that you realized just how good this mix of orchestra and rock band was going to sound. He also performed another Journey song "Faithfully" and the Eagles "Hotel California" before performing his signature tune "Eye of The Tiger". Next up was Terri Nunn who stole the show with her voice and timeless good looks. Her too short set consisted of Berlin's "No More Tears" and "The Metro" before closing with a soaring "Take My Breath Away" from the Top Gun soundtrack.
A Night of Symphonic RockAfter a brief intermission Mickey Thomas from Starship hit the stage and offered a few songs from his vast catalog of hits including "Find Your Way Back", "Sara", "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" and "We Built This City". Rochester native Lou Gramm, one of the finest rock voices of all time and still in fine form, brought out the hits with "Feels like the First Time", "I Wanna Know What Love Is" replete with requisite audience sing along, "Cold as Ice" and "Jukebox Hero" before closing with "Hot Blooded". The four singers returned for a group rendition of Journey's "Don't Stop Believing" that sent the crowd home happy. A highly polished show made better by the artists and their timeless music A Night of Symphonic Rock is a must see show.

Buddy Guy and Tom Hambridge
Center for the Arts - Suny@Buffalo
April 21, 2017

Concert Review - by Bob Silvestri

Buddy Guy and Tom HambridgeLegendary guitarist Buddy Guy made a stop at UB's Center for the Arts on April 21, 2017 touring to support his latest album Born to Play Guitar. While Guy's shows hasn't changed much over the last few tours at 80 years old he can still put on a show for the ages whether it is your first time seeing him or someone like myself who has seen him multiple times. He is truly the last of the great original bluesmen. His influence on others is evident throughout the show as Guy plays songs and snippets from the likes of Hendrix, Clapton and SRV to name a few. Guy can also show boat with the best by playing the guitar behind his back, with a drumstick, a towel and even by rubbing the guitar on his shirt and backside of his pants. He is a great story teller as well with tales of early Buffalo appearances with Junior Wells and Muddy Waters, of growing up poor in Louisiana and of his mother. He also has a mischievous playful side as when he admonished the crowd for missing their sing along cue or asking a gentlemen to "Shut the f*** up" as he was talking to a lady in the crowd. One of the anticipated Buddy Guy and Tom Hambridgemoments of the show comes when Guy takes a stroll though the entire floor of the venue while playing the guitar on his signature hit "Damn Right I Got The Blues". He even stopped to let a wheelchair bound patron take a few strums on the guitar during the song. Other highlights from the show include "Slippin' In", the tender John Hiatt penned ballad "Fells Like Rain", "Hoochie Coochie Man" and "Skin Deep" with Tom Hambridge helping out on vocals. Buffalo born Grammy winner Hambridge opened the show with a nice set. Hambridge has been working closely with Guy the last few years as producer, performer and touring partner and it has proved a fruitful collaboration for both. Hambridge set consisted of songs he wrote for others, "I Got Your Country Right Here" (Gretchen Wilson), "The Fixer" (George Thorogood) and "It Hurt So Bad" (Susan Tedeschi) along with a few tracks from his solo albums including "Shoebox", "Nineteen" and "Upside of Lonely".

The Traditional
Waiting Room - Buffalo, NY
April 8, 2017

Concert Review - by Bob Silvestri

The TraditionalProvocative purveyors of alternative power music The Traditional held their album release party for their latest disc Queen of Heaven upstairs at Waiting Room in Downtown Buffalo on April 8, 2017. The band (Anthony Musior-bass/vocals, Michael Bienias-guitar/bkgr vocals, Jon Coric-drums/bkgr vocals and Charlie Rumfola-guitar/bkgr vocals) and their rabid legion of fans came out loaded for bear and each fed off the energy of the other making for an energetic show. The band thanked their family and fans for coming out and supporting them and had a couple of fans on stage to sing a verse or two, crowd surf or high five the band. Mixing up cuts from their new album Queen of Heaven along with cuts from their previous disc How To Live With Out Blood and a few rarities the band seemed in peak mid tour form. The twin guitar assault of Bienias and Rumfola dazzled as the engine room of Coric and Musior added thunderous muscle to the mix. The thirteen song set kicked off with the lead cut from QoH "Parlez Vous-Francais?" followed by "Do You Miss Me Yet?" from the previous album. The band also offered up "Kerosene", "Thirty", "Enough" and "She Don't Know" from the new album and "Haunt You", "Marilyn", and "Skeletons" from HTLWOB. A couple of deep cuts included "Perks Of Being Alive" from a split single and "Give Up Your Ghosts" and I'm Losing My Mind" from the EP You Can't Rebuild Forever. They finished the night with "My Brother Is The Sea" written for Musior's late brother. "My Brother…" is always a poignant moment in any Traditional show but this one had added meaning as Musior was joined by his family and friends for a tearful group hug center stage at song's end.

Eric Van Houten
Venu - Buffalo NY
April 1, 2017

Concert Review - by Bob Silvestri

Eric Van HoutenDon't you love the hometown boy makes good story? West Seneca native and rising Nashville music star Eric Van Houten fits that story line. His sold out show (over 1,100 family, friends and fans) at Venu in Downtown Buffalo Saturday evening April 1, 2017 shows this is his time in the spotlight. In town to celebrate the release of his new self titled EP and the bonus news of having his new single "Do You Wanna" added to over 60 country music radio outlets including Buffalo's own WYRK made for one memorable show from Houten and his band. His rocking country sound features hints of classic rock ala Bob Seeger with the modern country sounds of say Keith Urban. Mixing older songs with cuts from the new EP along with some new songs Houten is already at work on and covers the over ninety minute set was well paced from beginning to end.

Eric Van HoutenHighlights included the opening song "Tongue Tied" from his first release, "Get In My Arms", "Runaway Love" and "Do You Wanna" from the new EP along with new cuts "Be Here A While" and "Helluva Good Time". A couple of cuts from his previous release, "25 Miles" and "Moving To The Beat" featured local guitarist Rob Burgio and drummer Tom Lafferty while a couple of covers including a snippet of Led Zeppelin's "When The Levee Breaks", Third Eye Blind's "Semi Charmed Life" and an audience sing along on the Goo Goo Dolls "Iris" were all warmly received by the crowd. Van Houten wrapped up the show with "Freeway" another new song and "Get Your Buzz On" but not before thanking the crowd for coming out and supporting him with grace, humility and sincerity in his words. Van Houten headed to the merch table after the show where he was greeted with a huge throng of supporters looking to say "Hi" or to get an autograph or photo with him where he obliged everyone. Hometown boy makes good indeed!

Buffalo born and now Nashville based D.L. Duncan has released a new self titled album featuring his sandpaper smooth vocals, great fret chops and exquisite songwriting. Duncan has made a name for himself in Nashville with his songwriting and playing and he brings in a host of his friends to help out here. Among them are guitarist Sonny Landreth, the legendary Delbert McClinton on harmonica, David Hood on bass, Vince Santoro on the kit, Kevin McKendree on piano and B3 organ, The McCrary Sisters adding sweet background vocals, Guthrie Trapp on guitar and mandolin, Lynn Williams on percussion and David Pinkston on pedal steel. Highlights include "I Ain't The Sharpest Marble" a nice shuffle blues featuring Duncan's self depreciating lyrical wit, "You Just Don't Never Know" featuring McClinton's scorching harp playing and The McCrary Sisters adding a churchy touch on background vocals and "Your Own Best Friend" where Landreth adds some stinging slide guitar. "I Know A Good Thing" which Duncan wrote with Curtis Salgado, the somewhat autobiographical "Orange Beach Blues" and the slow blues burner "St. Valentine's Day Blues" that shows off some tasty picking from Duncan all shine as well. The album closes with "All I Have To Offer You Is Love" a tender heart on your sleeve love song. For more on D.L. Duncan visit or

The TraditionalThe Traditional
- The Queen of Heaven -

I've always had a soft spot for The Traditional. Their live shows almost always border on a controlled chaos and mayhem with the bands performance and crowd interaction. But what sets them apart from other bands of their ilk is the depth of the lyrics around the locomotive like sound of the music. Their new release on Anchor Eighty Four Records titled The Queen of Heaven goes even deeper. Introspective lyrics about lost love, shattered friendships, personal transformation and redemption abound among the six tracks. Now down to a three piece the band (Anthony Musior-bass/vocals, Mike Bienias-guitar/bkgr vocals and Jon Coric-drums/bkgr vocals) has soldiered on and have released some of their strongest work to date. Bienias shines throughout the album with tasty and original solos and fills while the rhythm section of Musior and Coric supply the thunder. Musior's scream along vocals and The Traditional's unique background harmonies were all captured, produced, mixed and engineered by the nimble fingers of Jay Zubricky. Highlights include the opener "Parlez Vous-Francais?" a heavy rocker and "Thirty" that both show Bienias' outstanding guitar playing, "She Don't Know", "Enough" and "Kerosene". Davey ODavey O
- A Bright Horizon Line -

Poet Robert Frost could not have had Davey O in mind when he famously wrote "…and miles to go before I sleep" but that sums up Davey's music, touring and performance schedule. A human machine of energy and motion he seems capable of tiring the youngest of those who perform and tour. This modern day troubadour has released another stellar album of Americana Roots music from the heart and the head. The ten tracks, nine originals and one cover, find Davey handling vocals, guitars, harmonica and bass along with a multitude of musicians who share his vision among them Tracy Grammer -vocals, Eric Lee-mandolin and fiddle, Matt Nakoa-piano and Pat Wictor-dobro. The album was recorded at Fox Run Studios in Sudbury, MA. by Neale Eckstein who beautifully captures the magic of the performances and songs. Highlights include "The Easy Work", "For Them", "OK" with some nice piano playing from Nakoa, "Coming Home", "Nothing Could Go Wrong" and his ode to his hometown "To Buffalo". Also of note is a first take live recording of the Crowded House classic "Don't Dream It's Over". The album seems to form a cinematic passage that is rewarding for both the artist and the listener. - Live At Raven -

First Ward is the latest project from Buffalo based artist Zak Ward and Live at Raven is a five song EP teaser as the band (Zak Ward-guitar/vocals, Dave Harris-guitar, Josh Mullin-bass and Steve Tripi-drums) finishes recording their full length album. The title refers to the studio where the EP was recorded with Mike Zeis, John Richter and Sean Szymanski on production duty. Jay Zubricky and Allen Farmelo added their mixing and mastering skills at GCR Audio and The Snow Farm. The disc also gave the band a chance to go out and road test the material before a live audience in between studio sessions. The five songs are an invigorating mix of alternative rock, pop and bits of jazz and folk. Musicianship and attention to details in songwriting, arrangements and production is abundant here. Stand out tracks include "Clapper's Bell", "Lost" and "You're Not Alone". For more information about First Ward and their new EP Live at Raven visit or

Consisting of Dan McCormick (vocals/guitar), Joe Morganti (lead guitar), Mike Tomasulo (drums/vocals) and John Vaughan (bass/vocals) the group has forged a sound that sets them apart from the large number of alternative band on the scene today. Buffalo Blues Benefit For VeteransHome-Buffalo Blues Benefit For Veterans
- Various Artists -

Buffalo Music Hall of Fame member Bob James has always been a towering presence on the Buffalo music landscape. In addition to solid musical chops, studio wizardry skills and mentoring music to school age children James has a knack from assembling compilation albums from Buffalo based artists for various charities. Buffalo Public Schools, Music is Art and the Food Bank of WNY are just some of the non profits that James has supported over the years. His latest worthy call to arms is the large segment of homeless veterans in WNY. For this project James has assembled stalwarts from the Buffalo blues scene for an incredible album titled Home-Buffalo Blues Benefit For Veterans. The twelve tracks feature Peter Case, Miller & The Other Sinners, Randle and The Late Night Scandals, Mick Hayes, Doug Yeomans, Dave Constantino, Freightrain, Caitlin Koch, Savannah King, Bob James and Friends, The Love Parade and the Buffalo Blues Benefit Band. All the music is masterfully done and ranges from folk blues to Delta Blues to blues rock and every shuffle and blues riff known to humanity thrown in to boot. Each of the tunes represents a piece of the story about a returning veteran told about in the liner notes and the songs have been sequenced to tell that story but each are strong as individual tunes from each artist. Another note is the sheer talent and the amount of talented guitar slingers and lady singers the WNY area has to offer. Sheryl CrowSheryl Crow
- Be Myself -

Sheryl Crow returns to her breezy California pop on her latest release Be Myself and turns in her best album in awhile. Mixing jangly guitars with funky Memphis soul and a dollop of country roots the eleven song album will have you tapping your toes in no time. But don't let that sunny pop sound fool you. Crow has a lot on her mind and unabashedly spews her thoughts whether railing against an ex lover ("Alone in the Dark"), technology ("Grow Up") or Hipster culture ("Be Myself") she is spot on with her candid observations. Crow once again worked with longtime collaborator Jeff Trott and brought in Tchad Blake to mix and engineer the sessions. Other helping out on the album include Gary Clark Jr., Doyle Bramhall II and The McCrary Sisters. Lots of good stuff here including the funky "Roller Skate", "Halfway There", "Long Way Back", "Heartbeat Away" a tub thumping rocker, the ballad "Love Will Save The Day" and "Rest of Me". Crow proves her stature as an iconic American singer songwriter with Be Myself and a welcoming return to her roots. For more information on Sheryl Crow check out

Eric BibbEric Bibb
- Migration Blues -

Award winning Bluesman Eric Bibb has released a new album titled Migration Blues a timely meditation on the plight of people the world over. To quote Bibb from the liner notes " Whether you're looking at a former sharecropper, hitchhiking from Clarksdale to Chicago in 1923, or an orphan from Aleppo, in a boat full of refugees in 2016-it's migration blues. As history shows, we all come from people who, at some time or another, had to move". The fifteen tracks deal with lost souls, displacement and the oppression felt by many as they try to assimilate themselves to their new cultures and hardships. Highlights include "Refugee Moan", "Prayin' For Shore", the instrumental title cut "Migration Blues", "We Had To Move", "Brotherly Love" and "With A Dolla' In My Pocket". Other cuts such as the instrumental "La Vie C'est Comme Un Oignon" deal with the Expulsion of The Acadians who were forced to leave the Canadian Maritime provinces for Louisiana, "Four Years, No Rain" and the traditional African American spiritual "Mornin' Train" resonate as well. A couple of covers fit the theme of the album with Bibb covering Woody Guthrie's "This Land Is Your Land" and Bob Dylan's "Masters of War". Helping Bibb on the album are JJ Milteau on harmonica and Michael Jerome Browne on guitar, banjo and fiddle along with Ulrika Bibb on vocals, Olle Linder on drums and Big Daddy Wilson on background vocals. Long recognized as one of the top blues harmonica players in the Houston area Steve Krase shoots for big league prominence on his latest release Should've Seen It Coming eleven tracks (plus two bonus tracks) of party blues meant to be played loud for maximum effect. A lot of albums featuring the blues harp get redundant fast with the same droning sound but Krase eases back and plays a minimal amount of notes with maximum results. His harp playing is bright and melodic and without show boating. Helping Krase on the album are the always amazing Trudy Lynn adding her unique vocal styling, master guitar slingers Mark May and Bob Lanza and longtime band mate and collaborator Rock Romano on bass among others. Duke Robillard and his All-Star ComboDuke Robillard and his All-Star Combo
- Blues Full Circle -

Duke Robillard has released a new album titled Blues Full Circle a thirteen song collection of outstanding blues featuring Robillard's fretwork and one of a kind guitar tone and his up to the task All-Star Combo (Bruce Bears-piano/Hammond Organ, Brad Hallen-bass and Mark Teixeira-drums). One of the most extraordinary guitarists around from his founding days of Roomful of Blues to stints with The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Bob Dylan and others along with a long distinguished solo career Robillard went through a rough patch during the making of the album as a torn rotator cuff took him out of commission for a year. During his recovery he rediscovered his passion for photography and painting. One of those painting adorns the cover on Blues Full Circle. Robillard wrote ten of the thirteen tracks here and they include some dusted off from his Roomful days 30 to 45 years ago to recently written songs hence the full circle reference. Highlights include "Lay a Little Lovin' on Me" a nice walking blues number, the slow blues moaner "Mourning Dove", "Fool About My Money" and "Worth Waiting For". A trio of special guests helps out Robillard as well. Former Roomful vocalist Sugar Ray Norcia stops by to lend his vocals to the horn blasting blues stomper "Last Night", Kelley Hunt adds piano and vocal to her own "The Mood Room" her ode to Duke's home studio and Jimmie Vaughan and Duke trade guitar licks on "Shufflin' and Scufflin'" with Roomful sax player Doug James adding his horn to the mix. Beth GarnerBeth Garner
- Snake Farm -

Nashville based roots and blues singer/guitarist Beth Garner has released a new album titled Snake Farm. The Texas native moved to Nashville a few years back and promptly got a gig with The Red Elvises and headed out on tour with the band. After returning to Tennessee she found her way to Broadway the musical and magical strip of Honky Tonks and music bars located in downtown Nashville. After honing her chops further she struck out on her own to rave reviews. On Snake Farm Garner wrote or co wrote six of the seven tracks and produced the disc with Randy Kohrs at Slack Key Studios. Helping Garner are Rory Hoffman (sax/keys/rhythm guitar), Wes Little (drums), Steve Forrest (bass) and Angela Primm and Gale Mayes (background vocals). Lots of good stuff here including the slow funky blues of "Alright by Me (Mr. Fisher)" with soulful background vocals from Primm and Mayes, the harp drenched "Backroads Freddie", "Drop Down", "Used To Be" a big blues rocker about a long lost love and the hard charging blues rock number "Wish I Was". A couple of other standouts include the Ray Wylie Hubbard penned title track "Snake Farm" and the Garner written "Ramblin' Man" (not to be confused with The Allman Brothers version) that shows off her considerable slide guitar chops. Garner is definitely a rising star on the blues circuit. For more information on Beth Garner and her latest release Snake Farm check out

- I'll Sing The Blues For You -

Blues belter Trudy Lynn has released a new album, her 12th solo disc, titled I'll Sing The Blues For You. The album almost didn't come to fruition as Lynn was battling through some tough times last year including the death of her son but with help from Connor Ray Records boss Steve Krase they weathered through. Krase also plays harmonica on the album and backs up Lynn along with David Carter on guitar, Terry Dry on bass, Randy Wall on keyboards and Matt Johnson on drums. The album features ten tracks of funk, blues and soul all delivered with Lynn's signature blues vocals. Highlights include the Lynn penned "Thru Chasin' You" a funky number sure to get the feet moving, "Alright Baby" from the Big Mama Thornton catalog, the Lowell Fulson gem "Black Night", two Memphis Minnie covers "World Of Trouble" and "Kissin In The Dark", Johnny Copeland's "Down On Bended Knee" and a cover of the Mabel Smith/Fred Mendelsohn penned "Ramblin' Blues". Cary MorinCary Morin
- Cradle To The Grave -

Hailed as one of the best finger styled pickers around Roots based guitarist and singer Cary Morin has released a new album titled Cradle To The Grave. Morin is the recipient of numerous blues awards both domestically and internationally and has appeared on the stages of the biggest blues festivals here and abroad. Recorded at Studio Underground in Ft. Collins, Colorado, Morin wrote eight of the eleven tracks here. Highlights include "Lay Baby Lay"; the title cut "Cradle To The Grave", "Trust" and "Ghost Dog". Another stand out track is "Dawn's Early Light" written in support of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe. Being a Crow tribal member himself the song has special meaning to Morin. The three covers all shine as well with Morin tackling Prince's "Nothing Compares To You", "Mississippi Blues" from bluesman Willie Brown and a great run through Phish's "Back On The Train". Chip Taylor AKA James Wesley VoightChip Taylor AKA James Wesley Voight
- A Song I Can Live With -

Legendary songwriter Chip Taylor has released a new album titled A Song I Can Live With. Yes, the Voight family name includes Taylor's brother actor Jon Voight and his niece Angelina Jolie but Taylor has just as lofty credentials. In the Sixties Taylor wrote the hits "Wild Thing" (The Troggs and Jimi Hendrix), "Angel of The Morning" (Merrilee Rush and Juice Newton) and "I Can't Let Go" (The Hollies and Linda Ronstadt) along with a string of others for Janis Joplin, Frank Sinatra, Aretha Franklin and other artists. In the mid Seventies Taylor walked away from the music business to pursue other endeavors. He returned in the Nineties with steady touring and album releases and working with new artists including Carrie Rodriguez. His dark brooding vocals and stream of conscious lyrics are full of stark images that make the listener pay attention to the narrative of the songs. On A Song I Can Live With check out "Until It Hurts" where Taylor names checks everyone and everything including David Bowie, Lou Reed and Eric Andersen, the piano ballad "Joan, Joan, Joan", "Senorita Falling Down", the title cut "A Song I Can Live With" and "Save Your Blues And Your Money". Helping out Taylor who handles guitar and vocals on the album are Goran Grini on a variety of keyboards, guitars and more, John Platania on guitar, Greyson Walters on upright bass, Greg Leisz on pedal steel, Riley Voight-Ennis on flute and Kate and Sammy Voight on background vocals. Chip Taylor has earned his elder statesmen status check out his new release A Song I Can Live With and more by visiting
